General warns of tough task to secure Kandahar

By Matthew Green in Kabul

General David Petraeus, the head of US central command, warned that insurgents would take “horrific actions” as thousands of troops launch a major operation to secure the Afghan city of Kandahar this summer.

The Taliban has escalated a campaign of suicide bombings and targeted killings ahead of a planned offensive by mainly US forces to clear insurgents from surrounding districts.

Gen Petraeus told a news conference held during an unannounced visit to the city on Friday that the Taliban would resist attempts to drive them from their havens.

”The enemy is going to take horrific actions to disrupt the progress that Afghan and coalition civilian and military elements are working so hard to achieve,” said Gen Petraeus, whose command includes Afghanistan and Iraq.

3. Wait, didn't we "secure" Kandahar once or twice already?
Sisyphus had nothing on armies in Afghanistan.

The term caliphate (from the Arabic خلافة or khilāfa) refers to the first system of governance established in Islam, and represented the political authority and unity of the Muslim Ummah. It was initially led by Muhammad's disciples as a continuation of the political authority the prophet established, known as the 'Rashidun Caliphate'. It represented the political unity of the Muslim Ummah, not the theological unity as this was a personal matter, and was the world's first major welfare state.<1><2> A "caliphate" is also a state which implements such a government.

6. I still have not heard a description of what victory would look like in Afghanistan. If you don't
even know your objective, why are you sacrificing the resources necessary to rebuild your own country, over there, Mr. President?
And while your at it, we are getting very little bang for our Defense Budget dollar. These guys piss away millions and we get nothing for it. Compared to the Military, Wall Street is frugal. Both need to be demoted if America is to regain some of our leadership in things important to the lives of People.
