President Obama heading to Gulf for oil spill update
Edited on Sat May-01-10 07:05 AM by cal04
Source: Associated Press

President Barack Obama is planning to head to the Gulf Coast sometime in the next 48 hours to get an update on efforts to contain the massive spill from an offshore drilling rig.

A senior administration official says details of the trip are still being worked out, and Obama will likely travel with a ''small footprint'' -- meaning a very small entourage. The official spoke Saturday on condition of anonymity because the trip has not been officially announced.

Obama has vowed his administration will do all that it can to battle the spill, which came from a BP exploratory rig. It began washing ashore Thursday and is already the worst in U.S. waters in decades.

1. Is he going there
to tell us how safe offshore drilling is in this day and age?

2. The guy who just paraded the idea that drilling is safe?
He should take a look and see the destruction on the Gulf, and apologize for his errors. He said spills don't happen anymore, in general. He said it in the most patronizing and dismissive way possible, and yet, look at the Gulf.

3. A hard +1
His luck with pandering to the corporate right and alienating key constituencies for perceived political expediency just ran out.

Had he stood his ground with progressives and the alternative energy programs he campaigned on- he'd be looking prescient. Instead, the administration- along with many Democrats will get lumped in with the drill, baby drill crowd.

5. +100
I hope he stays there long enough to see what the coast will look like for a decades to come -- coated in black goo, littered with the bodies of the dead and dying. :(

11. Under the proper circumstances, it probably is much safer.

As has been repeatedly noted, our enforced safety measures for drilling don't even measure up to the Brazilian standard. BP relied upon the "trust us, we'll do a good job" story, and then half-assed the actual effort.

I don't support more drilling, but neither will I lay all of the blame at the President's feet. The companies need to feel the fire, because this could have happened at any time prior to Obama's statements.

6. Actually, the president could do more by just staying in DC...
where he has all the high-tech equipment to directly monitor the spill and issue what orders he feels are necessary.

For him to waste his time appearing on the site is just plain political junketing.

8. If he doesn't go there in person to see what is happening the repugs will
use it against him to say he doesn't care about the people there. So I agree with you that he could stay in D.C. and monitor the situation just fine; politically he has to put in a personal appearance.
