Attorneys agree to block on Oklahoma abortion law
By TIM TALLEY, Associated Press Writer

Monday, May 3, 2010 at 7:40 a.m.

OKLAHOMA CITY— Attorneys for Oklahoma Attorney General Drew Edmondson have agreed to a court order requested by abortion providers to temporarily block enforcement of the state's new abortion law.

The law requires pregnant women to have an ultrasound and hear a detailed description of the fetus before they can get an abortion.

The agreement stopped a scheduled hearing Monday in Oklahoma County District Court on the request for a restraining order by the New York-based Center for Reproductive Rights. District Judge Noma Gurich said she was notified by attorneys for both sides that they would accept the temporary restraining order.

2. Prejudgment TRO ~~ issues only when there is a likelihood of success.
Edited on Mon May-03-10 10:57 AM by Hepburn
This is good news, IMO: If the attys for the supporters of this POS law are willing to accept a TRO without a hearing before the court, my reaction is that they admitting that the opposition to it will succeed.

Hope I am correct! :hi:

Edit to correct typo

3. This law is MEANT to harm woman:
Clinic: New Okla. abortion law hard on patients

OKLAHOMA CITY — The manager of an Oklahoma abortion clinic says the requirements of the state's new law have been difficult for some patients to handle.

Reproductive Services of Tulsa director Linda Meek said Wednesday the clinic is complying with the law requiring women to have an ultrasound and hear a detailed description of the fetus before getting an abortion. Meek says some patients have left the ultrasound room in tears, but none has canceled an abortion.

Notice that it has NOT prevented one abortion ~~ all it has done is torture a woman for using her constitutionally protected right to privacy.

Fuck the Oklahoma assholes that did this!

7. Exactly...
What's next? Torturing people before they can vote? Showing potential gun-owners grisly photos of blown off limbs caused by firearms? Oh wait...they would never make a law like that!

OKLAHOMA CITY - Oklahoma County District Judge Noma Gurich on Monday put a controversial ultrasound abortion law on hold.

Gurich said the plaintiffs and the state agreed to put the law on hold pending the outcome of the case.

Reproductive Services in Tulsa and Dr. Larry A. Burns, who practices in Norman, sued the state following the Legislature's override of Gov. Henry's veto of House Bill 2780.

The measure would require women seeking an abortion to have an ultrasound within an hour of the procedure and have its findings explained to her. The law went into effect immediately after the override last week.

13. My mistake I read it too fast
but as far as costly is concerned, which is more important, to do what you know is right or do something just to keep your job??

I think we have way more than enough people that are just interested in keeping their jobs and not care one lick about the rest of the people

I wasn't trying to imply otherwise -- just pointing out what the judge had put on the line in doing the right thing here.

21. Yup.
This is a law that should not be allowed to stand because its sheer intent is to try and play on the heartstrings and guilt someone seeking an abortion.

17. I most certainly wouldn't want to live there or have children there
because they seem to be in thrall to religious extremists who think they own women because of their creation myth.

I applaud this judge for doing the right thing in the face of such stupidity.

19. I'm glad to hear this. I hope it is permanently banned from
becoming law. It's an ugly and perverted law, the only purpose of which is to further put the heavy foot of religion (and male dominance) on women.

20. Folks in Arizona could learn a lesson here
This is the way to challenge a bad law. You'll have a much better chance at success this way than simply going off half cocked. Anybody gettin' my drift?
