Former Marine protests funeral picketers

The Westboro Baptist Church, whose members have picketed the funerals of fallen troops, is now facing protesters at its own front door.

Former Marine and Iraq veteran Jerry Bacidore, along with about 15 supporters, recently traveled nine hours from LaSalle, Ill., to attend a service at the Topeka, Kan., church and stage a silent protest.

Westboro has gained much attention for its practice of picketing outside military funerals, carrying signs with hate-filled messages, such as “Thank God for IEDs,” and attributing troop deaths to the nation’s tolerance of homosexuality.

Highly offended by these actions, Bacidore wanted to do something about it.

Edited on Sun May-09-10 11:27 PM by tomm2thumbs

for some reason it gets dropped in long links and in come cases messes up the link - or you can click on the 'Marine Corps Times' link from the main DU homepage More News section where the post originates

5. It always surprises me to know that RWers think Phelps is a LWing nut.
Phelps may have registered as a Democrat years back, but he represents nothing of what I see as Democratic and he does seem to represent plenty of Republicanism: anti-gay, religious extremism, and just being downright angry, disgruntled and mean.

16. Not really; he was a civil rights attorney in the 1960's
He was instrumental in getting rid of Jim Crow laws in Kansas.

31. George Wallace started out as a progressive, also.

Refused to walk out of the D convention with Strom Thurmond, got endorsed by the NAACP, etc.

Nevertheless, it does not change what he was, nor what Phelps is.

32. And he ended up as one, didn't he?
Strange paths life takes us on sometimes.

But my point was Phelps has been consistently pro-racial-equality and anti-sexual-orientation-equality for his whole career.

The closest thing to his ideology is probably the KKK. On the somewhat mainstream spectrum, the closest thing is the Paultards.

9. meanwhile, WBC members were picketing a funeral for 29 victims of a coal mining accident in WV
people like that, with no soul, no humanity, should be shunned--and consider themselves lucky that that's ALL it is, a shunning, and not something terribly violent.
I'm sure Fred Phelps is delighted at the extra publicity.
When he finally croaks, are we going to be told to "respect the dead" and refrain from grave dancing?

Make sure there is a "/" at the end of the link in the URL location box. Didn't make it into the original link and that website won't auto-add it.

30. They're nothing but camera whores.
They think they'll get media attention by protesting at funerals. I hope those miners' families go after them...but not in a way that will bring a lawsuit. That's how they make their money.
