Supporters (Ohio) of Arizona-like immigration law focus on 2011
Source: Dayton Daily News

If Ohio voters get a chance to cast their ballots on an Arizona-like law to crack down on illegal immigrants, the opportunity wouldn’t come until November 2011 at the earliest, state Rep. Courtney Combs, R-Hamilton, said Monday, May 10.

He and Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones are trying to line up the support and resources to run a campaign to get the proposal before voters.

Arizona’s recently adopted immigration law has set off a national fire storm among supporters and critics, extending to Ohio.

Jones has said he would spearhead a statewide “citizens’ initiative” to put a similar proposal on the ballot, possibly this November. Gov. Ted Strickland has said he would veto any Arizona-like bill.

The usual list of suspects. A republican state politician wanting to get a boost from a "Let's be as tough as Arizona" anti-immigrant law. Our own Buckeye version of Sheriff Arpaio. And, thankfully, a Democratic governor who will veto any such legislation.

Ohio is proof that if republicans can't make pass divide-and-conquer laws the old fashioned way, they go the referendum route.

1. The RNC is setting Ohio to go Red...they are going to do EVERYTHING
they can to win State government and electoral votes back to red. They have even brought John Kasich out of Lehman Brothers to do it. Everyone needs to watch the amount of money spent on the Ohio state races this fall to see what I mean. It will be apocalyptical money.

And the illegal immigrant referendum? It will be lip service, since no one seems interested in visiting Able Roofing sites and putting their owners in jail for hiring those who are in this country illegally. It will be simply a piece of the plan to whip up the bigoted underbelly of the Republican party and those independents who really "aren't" independent at all.

5. Ohio has been under Republican control since 1994 except
for the past few years.

And everybody expects all that crap done to the state to be fixed quickly and "overnight" ...

2. My sympathies to you
I'd comment that it's merely political posturing, but it's more than that--those idiots really do want to enact legislation or qualify a referendum for the ballot.

(BTW, as a Kerrytraveler from CA, I spent a couple of months in Columbus in '04 and had a wonderful time with the many terrific Buckeyes I met. After the election, they even got me into the championship game--and, while I'm not much of a college sports fan, it was a thrilling experience (and the band was spectacular!). I didn't keep the REAL buckeyes they souvenired me (from the trees on-campus), but I still tune in to the games once in a while--wearing the red Buckeyes hat they gave me.)

4. Hey! Quicksand Jesus! That's what I call that statue along I-75 north of Cincy.
It looks like Jesus is struggling as he's sinking in quicksand.

As for that last picture, if Ohio does pass an Arizona-type immigrant law, it seems to me that Mr. Orange Boner will need to carry a bunch of ID to convince the authorities he didn't come into this state illegally.

7. Boehner's from Loompaland
and he hasn't presented any proof to the contrary.

I've heard it called Touchdown Jesus or Big Butter Jesus. Quicksand works, too.

8. NE Ohio is an immigrants paradise too
Many people here speak English as a second language and Spanish is not the first.

It always amazes me the ones who are screaming about the Mexican immigrants wouldn't be here if earlier generations had done something about them or their parent coming to America.

If that fucking asshole wins the governors race in Ohio, I'm out of a job. He will cut funding to every state university, destroy every teachers union, and kill the dept of education. If it's one thing republicans hate, it's an educated populace.

Strickland HAS TO WIN OHIO in 2011!

10. This will be fun
Watch the rural teabaggers and the farmers fight it out. You won't get those teabaggers out in the field to pick the crops.
