Republican Richard Ross beat Democrat Peter Smulowitz to win the state Senate seat once occupied by Scott Brown, according to a GOP spokeswoman.

Massachusetts Republican Party spokeswoman Tarah Donoghue said Smulowitz conceded to Ross before 9 pm.

"Senator Brown's historic victory and Richard Ross' win tonight show that voters are seeking a return to balance in our state's political system,'' said Massachusetts Republican Party Chairman Jennifer Nassour "The Democrat machine is striking out in Massachusetts. Republicans are ready to put an end to one party rule on Beacon Hill, and we are offering the Commonwealth fiscally conservative and ethically strong candidates up and down the ballot in November.”

To win, Smulowitz needed to do well in Needham, the largest of the left-leaning communities in the district. But he angered some voters in his hometown during the primary, when he attacked his opponent, state Rep. Lida Harkins, also of Needham, for accepting contributions from disgraced House speakers she served under.

Massachusetts can survive with a total of four Repukes plaguing us.

There aren't even enough Republicans in our State Congress for a baseball team.

6. Because we were complacent and taken by surprise.
And that includes Martha Coakley who barely campaigned in her spare time.

She didn't even announce campaign stops in advance.

When she came to Brockton, she stopped by some small cafe and briefly spoke the the 20 or so people who just happened to be there.

7. That's what they said about Coakley's chances too.
Nothing in politics is ever 100%. You say Coakley lost because she ran a bad campaign? Well can you give me 100% assurance that the next Dem candidate will not also run a bad campaign? I doubt if you can because at this point you don't even know who that candidate will be.

5. Very good, provided that the Democrats nominate someone who will actually deign to campaign.
Coakley tried to "phone it in".
