Bottles, fireworks hurled into U.S. Embassy compound

Five cans containing what appeared to be kerosene were hurled with fireworks into the compound of the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo on Saturday, the anniversary of the opening attacks in the Iraq war, it was learned Monday.

No damage to buildings was reported in the incident, which occurred in the predawn hours of Saturday. Police are searching for suspects on suspicion of a violation of the Minor Offence Law. They said they suspected the cans had been thrown by an antiwar protestor.

Investigators said a guard near the entrance of the embassy heard a sound at about 3:50 a.m. on Saturday and a subsequent search of the compound uncovered five 500-milliliter drink cans about 100 meters away from the entrance.
