A DESPERATE Government attempt to win its feud with the BBC over Iraq weapons claims blew up in its face last night.
The Ministry of Defence said one of its officials had confessed to being a source of BBC journalist Andrew Gilligan, who has accused Downing Street of "sexing up" an arms dossier.
According to the MoD, the contact said he made no comment to Gilligan about No.10 spin chief Alastair Campbell - the man the Radio 4 journalist says was behind the exaggerations.
Ninety minutes later, the BBC sank the bid to force it into a climbdown by insisting the official was NOT Gilligan's source.
