Obama and Calderón Decry Ariz. Immigration Law
Source: The New York Times

WASHINGTON — President Obama joined with the visiting president of Mexico on Wednesday to denounce the new Arizona law aimed at stopping illegal immigrants, and to defend his administration’s record on securing United States-Mexico border.

Speaking to reporters in the Rose Garden, Mr. Obama called the new law “a misdirected expression of frustration over our broken immigration system” and said his government “has devoted unprecedented resources” to stanching the illegal flow of people into the country.

“I want everyone, American and Mexican, to know my administration is taking a very close look at the Arizona law,” he said. “We’re examining any implications, especially for civil rights, because in the United States of America, no law-abiding person, be they an American citizen, a legal immigrant, or a visitor or tourist from Mexico, should ever be subject to suspicion simply because of what they look like.”

1. Soon Obama will be saying:
“I want everyone, potheads and medicinal patients, to know my administration is taking a very close look at the Californian law,” he said. “We’re examining any implications, especially criminal, because in the United States of America, no law-abiding person, be they an American citizen, a legal immigrant, or a visitor or tourist from Mexico, should ever be smoking the evil weed we call marijuana.”

2. Calderon can go fuck himself
Get his own country in order before criticizing the U.S. If Mexico weren't such a shit hole, illegal immigration wouldn't be as big of a problem.

I also seem to recall that foreigners are not allowed to own land in Mexico...

10. He didn't criticize the US, he criticited Arizona. And Obama seems to agree with such criticism.
What do you say about that? Can Obama go fuck himself too?

4. California's penal code is significantly more open for abuse
And Obama hasn't said anything about that law. Calderon can go fuck himself. His country's immigration laws are draconian compared to Arizona's.

5. "Illegal" farm subsidies
Get rid of all U.S. farm subsidies and watch all the farm jobs rush back over the border to cheaper land and labor in Mexico and all the illegal immigrants with it.

Go after all employers who hire illegal immigrants.

There, illegal immigration problem solved with no need to violate any U.S. citizen's fourth amendment rights or spit on constitutionally legitimate federal authority. It's so much easier to resent Mexicans (and other Latin Americans) though, I guess.

Then the question will be, how to do we keep U.S. farming alive without all the subsidies and cheap, hardworking labor so we have some level of farming self-sufficiency?

Legalize more immigrants of course, which is what we should have been doing all along.

8. Somehow, that never gets mentioned in the debate.
All I see in the media is the "damage" immigrants do to our economy. No one ever mentions that our economy is completely dependent on that same immigration.

Here's my solution. I admit it's radical, but a little radicalism now and then is a good thing.

Anybody, anywhere, can come to the US for as long as they want. Their presence here is absolutely legal, as long as they pass a background check. They can even work, drive, own property, whatever. However, employers will have to prove that they have made a good-faith effort to hire US citizens before being allowed to hire non-citizens. If they do hire non-citizens, they will have to pay the same wages Americans get for similar work, treat them according to the same conditions (breaks, shade, water, toilet facilities) they'd have to provide to Americans, and they'd have to pay a special tax, say, $1,000/year/worker. Voila, no more "advantage" to hiring immigrants, because it'd cost more to hire immigrants than American citizens.

And, since no one would be "illegal," there would be no rationale available to racist cops for harassing brown people.
