In a surprise move, the Staten Island Republican Party nominated Fossella for his old congressional seat.
Fossella's political career was seemingly dead when a 2008 DWI arrest ultimately revealed that he had a secret second family in Virginia.
According to the Staten Island Advance,
the committee voted overwhelmingly to endorse Fossella 23-4 over the two other candidates, Michael Allegretti and Michael Grimm.<snip>
Guy Molinari, Fossella's former mentor and now an advisor to Grimm, said, "I think the status of the Republican Party on Staten Island has reached a new low tonight."

GOP Executive Committee endorses Vito Fossella to oppose McMahon in November for Staten Island congressional seat
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. --- In a bombshell announcement, the Staten Island Republican Party executive committee last night endorsed former GOP Rep. Vito Fossella to run against Rep. Michael McMahon (D-Staten Island/Brooklyn) this fall.
<snip>
Fossella abandoned his 2008 re-election bid after a DUI arrest led to revelations that he had fathered a child during an extramarital affair. The seat was won by McMahon.
"There seems to be a three-ring circus on the Republican side of this race," McMahon said from Washington. "Whoever emerges in the center ring, I'll be proud and honored to run against. We'll see what happens in November."
