Less than half of US would vote to return Bush to White House
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/afp/20030730/pl_afp/us_politics_poll

"WASHINGTON (AFP) - Less than half of Americans surveyed -- only 47 percent -- would vote for President George W. Bush (news - web sites) in the 2004 election, according to a Gallup/CNN/USA Today poll published.

Some 41 percent of those polled said they would vote for the yet-to-be-chosen Democratic candidate. There are nine Democrats vying for their party's nomination.

The dip below the key 50 percent mark is "a sign that this thing's not done," political analyst Charles Cook told USA Today"

snip

Then there is this very interesting paragraph:

"The level of support for Bush was surprising, considering the same poll found that 58 percent approve of the job he is doing in office. According to USA Today, former presidents Ronald Reagan (news - web sites) and Bill Clinton (news - web sites) did not see significant differences between their approval ratings and election support."

This is huge. It's proof that while Chimpy's support is half a mile wide because of the war and only the war--it's only it's about a quarter of an inch deep. People (mostly swing voters, I bet) are perfectly willing to give him the benefit of the doubt as a "wartime president," but when it comes to walking into a voting booth and pulling a lever for him, they ain't gonna do it.

The beautiful thing is that as his depravity becomes more and more apparent even that support is bound to crumble.

But I am not confident in the voting public. Please excuse my pessimism. I'm trying to snap out.

7. This is great news...
I think people are finally waking up. Also, when I see those 70% who are for the invasion, I think of it this way: it's like asking them if they're for or against Saddam. They're not going to say they're for Saddam even if they don't like the lies and manipulation and how the rebuilding of Iraq is going.

10. Let's Draft Gore!!!
He beat , popular vote, Bush last time. I'm serious. I won't vote for a Bush lite like Gephardt and Lieberman. I think the Greens saw what they did to the environment by voting for Nader and electing Bush. Most of them won't make that mistake again.

9. Maybe another reason for the disparity
between the would you vote for him numbers and the job approval rating is because people are starting to feel that he has lied to them on just about everything, and it is easier on your ego to cast an anonymous vote for another candidate to get the liar out of office, as opposed to going public now and admitting that you were duped by an idiot? There was an earlier thread, http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=105&topic_id=55877&mesg_id=55877
discussing the topic of lying and how you felt when someone really told you a whopper. Look at the responses: I felt stupid, I felt betrayed, I felt ashamed. It's alot easier to act anonymously, than stand up and announce outloud that you were taken for a fool. For those that were fooled, the anger at being lied to will come next, and I hope it doesn't peak too much before next November. Just my opinion :)

15. She has a point
If the fix is in then you won't get him back to the hog lot in TX. He will be in the WH again. He could have a 0% approval/electability rating with a margin of error less than 1% and still get in if the election is fixed. Pound him on his policies, and everybody needs to write to you state and get something done about the voting machines.

16. He did say in his press conference today
that he takes full responsibility for everything he says. He also stated that he would be vindicated for the WMD accuasation. Since the Oday and Qusay did not give him a bump that he wanted he is going to have to try something else.
