Two sides in vaccine safety debate converge on Chicago
Source: Chicago Breaking New Center

Chicago is ground zero today in the debate over vaccine safety.

Dr. Andrew Wakefield, who recently was barred from practicing medicine in his native Great Britain, is expected to tell a "vaccination choice" rally this afternoon that he will resume his autism research in the U.S., even though his work linking a childhood vaccine to the disorder has been widely discredited.

The rally where Wakefield will speak was organized by several dozen advocacy groups who believe autism is linked to vaccines. Scheduled from 3 to 5 p.m. in Grant Park, the event is being held in conjunction with a conference hosted by the organizations Generation Rescue and Autism One. Signs suggested for the rally include: "Chicken Soup and Hugs, Not Your Mandated Drugs," "Don't Let Government Stick It To You" and "Don't Tell Me What To Do." A band called the Refusers that performs songs such as "Vaccine Gestapo" is expected to play.

Volunteers from Women Thinking Free, a group formed to address what members call issues of pseudoscience and misinformation targeted toward women, planned to counter-protest. The group says it is "hoping to do at least a small part to counteract the deadly message of the anti-vaccination movement."

2. There's no money in dying of preventable diseases.
However, I WOULD pay good money to vanquish the anti-vax assholes to Somalia, where nobody else is vaccinated, either.

4. You got that right
Dr. Wakefield’s highly touted and uber-marketed research has caused irreparable damage, and even though his study was discredited in 1998, he continued to promote himself and market his theory and hold speaking engagements and seminars in the U.S. until just earlier this year, falsely suggesting that vaccinations in general cause autism.

5. "Debate"? I didn't know there was one.
There are a few people who cling to a belief that's demonstrably false, but there's no real debate.
