Czech Social Democrats lead narrowly in election count

The Czech Republic's left-wing Social Democrats are leading with about 24% of the vote in the general election, with some 30% of ballots counted.

The conservative Civic Democrats are on 18.6%, the Czech Statistical Office said, with another rightist party, TOP09, on 14.4%.

The poll ends the rule of a caretaker cabinet in place for the past year.

A total of 25 parties, fielding some 5,000 candidates, competed for 200 seats in the lower house of the Czech parliament.
