Namibia HIV women sue over forced sterilisation
Source: Reuters

Three women in Namibia are suing the state for allegedly being sterilised without their informed consent after being diagnosed as HIV positive.

The women say the doctors and nurses should have informed them properly about what was happening.

The rights group representing them, the Legal Assistance Centre, says it has documented 15 cases of alleged HIV sterilisation in hospitals since 2008.

A march in their support is taking place in Windhoek as the case begins.

1. I don't ever agree with forced sterilization, but isn't the
responsible thing to do is never get pregnant if you are HIV pos? I honestly don't know, but I would think HIV would be passed on to any baby.

2. It would...
shared blood stream and all. Not quite sure how to feel about this, though.

3. I know how you feel. As I said, I don't like forced anything, but
it
s flat out stupid for a woman who is HIV pos. to have a baby, but will likely die before that child is raised...IF the child survives past 10. I would prefer some methon of preventing sex, but I don't know of any. Forced condom use is unreliablek and is mandating BS pills.

I had a neighbor who he & his sister made a decision never to marry because there was a history of mental illness in their family. I never saw him with a woman, nor her with a man. They were both successful...he was a banker & she was a university teacher, but it was THEIR DECISION, not someone elses.

I don't know what the answer is, but procreation isn't one of them.

7. There are a few cases where I *do* agree with it.
This being one.

Repeatedly turning out babies that are immediately taken into care
is another.

YMMV

4. That's horrible.
Women with HIV should be advised not to have children but forced sterilization is always wrong.

8. They seem to have been advised, but didn't understand
I wonder if they understand their attorneys now? These may be three women who aren't intellectually capable of understanding medical advice or lawsuits.

Hopefully someone is appointed by the court to make sure these women aren't being just as railroaded by the legal system as they were by the medical system.
