Factory Orders in U.S. Increase 1.2%, Signaling Strength in Manufacturing
Source: BLOOMBERG

June 3 (Bloomberg) -- Orders placed with U.S. factories rose in April for an eighth month, a sign of strength in manufacturing at the start of the second quarter.

The 1.2 percent increase in bookings followed a revised 1.7 percent gain in March that was larger than previously estimated, the Commerce Department said today in Washington. Factory shipments rose 0.6 percent.

Companies including Dow Chemical Co. and Deere & Co. are seeing increases in orders from around the world as inventories are replenished and investment in equipment picks up. Corporate and consumer spending may help the expansion withstand the European debt crisis.

“Business investment remains healthy,” said Sal Guatieri, a senior economist at BMO Capital Markets in Toronto. “Business capital spending will continue to lead the economy.”

8. It was PLUS 1.7 last month, and PLUS 1.2 more percent this month

For example... if it was 100 in March.... it was then 101.7 in April... and now 102.9 now.

i.e... manufacturing was higher in May than in April.

If you got a 1.7% raise last year and a 1.2% raise this year, would you argue that you are making less money now than you did last year?

You're a doomer... .with very little mathematical skills.

9. No, it was +1.7 YoY last month, and +1.2 YoY this month
Doesnt matter, the employment report out this morning was half what was expected, which is why the Dow is down last I looked.

11. Wrong - data is MoM. Official release and historical tables link

http://www.census.gov/cgi-bin/briefroom/BriefRm

Note in the pdf the monthly and YoY charts - APR 2009 348.1 MAR 2010 415012 APR 2010 420076 - clearly the 1.2% is MoM YoY would be +20%

There was no unemployment report - merely an ADP survey that has been averaging 0.17 ratio to actual unemployment reports in the recent past.

2. The tube lasers at my job have been cutting stainless steel for my section for a week now
We've run out of the little tubs we use to store the parts in... one of the operators was scavaging tubs we were using as tables and such to put parts in.

We've been hiring back a bunch of people, too... and working a fair bit of overtime.
