North Korean border guard 'shoots three Chinese dead '
Source: BBC

China says a North Korean border guard shot and killed three people on the Chinese side of the border last week.

A fourth person was injured in the incident in the north-eastern border town of Dandong, China said.

China has made a formal complaint to North Korea, a spokesman for the Chinese foreign ministry said.

The two countries are normally close allies. It is unusual for China to make any public criticism of its neighbour.

7. I don't think the Chinese are going to stay
as stoic as the South Korea. North Korea should watch what they are doing. China will wipe them out.

9. Dandong is a glittering "lure" for North Korean defectors
Edited on Tue Jun-08-10 08:51 AM by Ezlivin
Barbara Demick describes it in "Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea":

Dandong was a boom town. Its Yalu riverfront sparkled with the glass facades of new office and apartment buildings amid the tangle of cranes. Its prosperity was all the more striking in contrast to the desolation of North Korea directly across the river. Dandong, however, quickly proved to be an unwise choice for Oak-hee. The main rail link from Beijing to Pyongyang ran through the city, and much of the official trade was carried over the river by the China-Korea Friendship Bridge. North Korea's state-owned trading companies had offices in Dandong. The city was crawling with undercover security agents. (p. 228)

North Korean guards have no qualms about shooting across the river or even forging it to grab someone they think is trying to flee the country.

13. Not going to happen.
China will not invade DPRK or any other country. People have been saying that for a very long time...

There are many criminals working around the China-DPRK border who are involved in drug trade and human slave trade. I don't know who was shot but the Chinese protest may be largely pro forma.

12. Without Chinese RMB, that country ends
Most people here in China think NK are leeches. Enjoy the PR battle, Yoda. You may get the war you've wanted for a couple of years now. . .and if it's with China, it will be over within hours!
