Anglican Communion cuts US Episcopalians from ecumenical bodies for electing lesbian bishop
Edited on Tue Jun-08-10 04:57 PM by Ed Barrow
Source: Associated Press

The Anglican Communion has suspended U.S. Episcopalians from serving on ecumenical bodies because of the election of a lesbian as a bishop in California.

Rowan Williams, the archbishop of Canterbury and spiritual leader of the Anglican Communion, had called for action against the Episcopal Church for not observing a moratorium on appointing homosexuals to leadership positions.

The U.S. church opened a rift in the global communion seven years ago by electing a gay man, V. Gene Robinson, as bishop of New Hampshire.

2. Well, there were these reformers in the 16th Century, and they were cut from the RC communion.
And then there were these religious reformers in England who used their rotten king's marital spats to institute reforms that cut them from the RC communion.

Now the U.S. Episcopal church institutes reforms that get it cut from the Anglican communion.

Same old, same old -- preexisting communions resist needed reforms and excommunicate those making needed changes.

3. "The U.S. church opened a rift in the global communion ?"
How about, "The rest of the global communion pitched a hissy fit when the U.S. church elected a gay man, V. Gene Robinson, as bishop of New Hampshire?"

Fuck 'em.

4. In the British comedies that I've seen,
they insinuate that a significant number of clergymen (including bishops) exists in the Church of England. The only reason I can figure why there is a rift between the Anglicans and the Episcopalians is that the Episcopalians ordain their clergy as openly gay instead of doing it "hush, hush."

5. This dispute is so meaningless . . so nothing.
It has nothing to do with doctrine.
Nothing to do with liturgy, teaching, missions or practice.
The only issue here is the sexual orientation of the celebrant.
It's a rift created over a trifling consideration.
