FBI gave $25K to van der Sloot, official says
Source: CNN

The FBI paid Joran van der Sloot $25,000 in an undercover investigation of a plot to extort money from Natalee Holloway's mother, a federal law enforcement official told CNN Wednesday.

The FBI and U.S. Attorneys Office in Alabama arranged for a meeting where an undercover agent paid van der Sloot $10,000 in cash and another $15,000 in a wire transfer for information van der Sloot allegedly promised would lead to Holloway's body in Aruba, a source familiar with the case said.

It's unclear if that money funded van der Sloot's trip to Colombia and into Peru where authorities said he confessed this week to killing 21-year-old Stephany Flores.

Van der Sloot, a Dutch citizen, was twice arrested in connection with the 2005 disappearance of Holloway but was released for lack of evidence.

The information van der Sloot provided to the FBI was not true, according to an Interpol document obtained by CNN Wednesday.

3. Kind of interesting to think that this murder probably wouldn't have happened

if it weren't for the FBI money that bought this kid a poker trip to Peru.

Not really blaming the FBI, as obviously there's little way they could have predicted that he'd murder again.

4. This murder wouldn't have happened if
Aruban authorities hadn't caved in to his daddy's influence and money and if the little fucker weren't a rage-filled psycho who felt the need to fly off the handle and beat a woman to death with a tennis racket for the "crime" of being on his computer. This is all on him, period, and indirectly on his daddy who, if he were still alive, would be protecting him from this, too.

5. This money was part of a sting operation though. They were using it as bait to build a case...
...against him. Although it absolutely went ass-up when he used the money to kill again, this was their attempt to try to get him for Holloway's murder. Totally fucked up and tragic situation. And remember this is like 5 or so years after Holloway's murder. I don't think anyone expected he would kill again. The fucker'd already evaded charges after giving some details (while high) about her death by saying he was just trying to gain the trust of his dealer with bravado or some shit.

I am glad they were still trying to nab his ass.

Would he have killed again if it weren't for the sting money? I dunno. It's also in question whether he has killed others since then.

Would he have been arrested if he hadn't solicited money for the information that led to the sting? I doubt it.

It's a terrible situation.
