Bloomberg Urges Critics to Go Easier on BP
Source: CBS

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg became a lonely defender of BP PLC on Friday, declaring the world should not rush to point fingers at the British oil giant for the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

The billionaire mayor, a former CEO, became the most prominent politician to embrace BP, whose offshore rig exploded in April, killing 11 workers and setting off what has become the nation's worst oil spill. Scientists say the spill could now involve 42 million to more than 100 million gallons.

Bloomberg, who often sides with CEOs and private businesses entangled in public relations catastrophes, said he'd rather have BP worrying about stopping the leak than devising a legal strategy.

Mayor Bloomberg has no concept of what the real people in the Gulf are facing and feeling. He ought to just shut his yap and worry about the city that he somehow coerced into re-electing him beyond what the law allowed.

1. They have the money and resources to do both. If this had been an accident, that's
one thing. But they were fully aware that they were skirting safety regulations, submitting bogus requests, etc, and according to current and previous employees, that seems to be their SOP.

4. There were others complicit in that crime, they need to
be included in our condemnation, I think the officers of BP, Halliburton, and that other company (can't remember their name) need to be put in protective custody in a maximum security prison, for their own safety. We should also include those in the MMS that turned a blind eye to their violations. Holding them for 20 to 30 years might be long enough to ensure their safety.

6. Agreed 100%
Until we see those who cause these massive tragedies being held fully accountable, nothing will ever change. The same needs to happen for those at the root of the Wall Street initiated recession (including Bernie Madoff's family) and the Wall street bankers, ratings agencies and the SEC. Hold them all in protective custody for their own safety for a very long time.

Our "friends" seem to more toxic, more damaging to our long term survival than our enemies.

9. Exactly
If this was an act of God due to a hurricane, etc his statement would be more acceptable.

BP has had a 50 year history of screwing employees, people, countries, and the environment for the sake of profits. They deserve zero sympathy.

20. They need to live in the mess they've created, and to be reminded
daily of the misery they have caused. The gulf is going to smell of death for the rest of our lives, there's no quick fixes.

13. Mike Bloomberg needs to fuck himself.
He's an arrogant, authoritarian asshole who thinks that his money entitles him to whatever he wants, particularly in New York State politics. And when laws get in his way, he either breaks them or bribes people to get rid of them. For a guy who participated in the commission of federal felonies--including entrapment--as part of an "investigation" into sales at gun shows to claim that BP is being unfairly targeted is ironic beyond belief.

28. People tend to decide too much based on wedge issues alone.
For them, pro reasonable gun control, pro-choice, pro-gay = Democrat.

It ain't necessarily so.

The major Parties have been keeping us pre-occupied with those issues alone for way too long. Meanwhile, the two of them get closer together on those issues every month, it seems.

They use the liberal versus conservative battle as a ploy to keep us barefoot and stupid while "they" plunder the USA (and the earth) for that matter. They = rich elite greedy cocksuckers whose only mission in life is to get more money at the expense of the masses (as George Carlin would say). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acLW1vFO-2Q

Edited on Sat Jun-12-10 11:11 AM by pipoman
The hysteria triggered from MILLIONS AND MILLIONS of barrels of crude oil killing wildlife, plant life and an ecosystem...everything in it's path, which belongs to the Earth, not a bunch of greedy fuckers who are telling everyone to calm down? That hysteria?

23. Bloomberg is the sociopathic capitalist establishment personified.
You wouldn't find a better (or worse) combination of the billionaire, defender of the privileges of the wealthy and rich, enemy of working class people, owner of propagandizing business media, unprincipled political turncoat and power-hungry fascist in one person.

38. But Americans are being trained
to adore celebrity and the likes of the super rich by the perpetual trash that is produced by the TV media such as "My Super Sweet 16 Birthday Party" (for starters). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Super_Sweet_16

You see similar shows that encourage an adoring but barefoot audience of Americans to waste their time wishing for what they don't have, instead of understanding how they are being fucked. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acLW1vFO-2Q

I had not heard about the Super Sweet 16 show before but it sounds positively revolting. Why even put this crap on TV? Its pretty sad and sick that these kind of losers are held up as something to be emulated.

Edited on Sun Jun-13-10 02:32 PM by heliarc
Saw it in Harpers this month... but it looks like enterprising NY reporters already reported it. Problem is... Who's listening?

http://www.observer.com/2010/politics/bloomberg’s-offshore-millions

On edit... Hmmm... DU won't print the HTML link that includes the apostrophe so the link is broken up. There should be no space between "http://www.observer.com/2010/politics/bloomberg" and
"'s-offshore-millions"

So just tack the two together in your browser's address field.

37. It might be instructive for Bloomberg to hold a little town hall meeting down in
one of the coastal parishes of Louisiana. Say, this coming week.

Here he springs to the defense of British Petroleum from the sterile remove of a corporate board room many states away from people whose lives will be upended by this oil disaster.

Not good, Mikey.

Sometimes I get the feeling that for a lot of people on the East Coast, the world is a big void outside of New York City.

Just wait, Michael, until you stroll into your favorite seafood place and it turns out they have nothing to put on your plate. Maybe then you'll care, because it will directly affect YOU.
