Oil hitting Ala. beaches worst yet since spill
Edited on Sat Jun-12-10 11:41 AM by Barrett808

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. -- Alabama's beaches took their worst hit yet from an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico on Saturday as globs of crude and gooey tar - some the size of pancakes - lined the white sands and crews worked to try to keep a giant oil sheen just a few miles away from reaching the shore.

Scientists have estimated that anywhere between about 40 million gallons to 109 million gallons of oil have gushed into the Gulf since a drilling rig exploded April 20, killing 11 workers and triggering the worst oil spill in U.S. history.

The oil washing up on Alabama's shores was the heaviest since the rig explosion and came just as the summer beach season was picking up.

During a flight over the Gulf, Sean Brumley, an aerial spotter, said he saw an oily sheen and brown patches of oil floating for miles off the Alabama coast. Boats trying to remove the oil before it hit the coast worked about three miles out.

"The Gulf looks like it has chicken pox," Brumley said.

1. uh-oh, there goes BP's veil of secrecy & ability to hide evidence again
It's just so darn hard sometimes to hide 75,000 bpd washing up in wetlands, on beaches and all over birds and aquatic life. :puke:

16. at least send your congresspeople a message: hold BP accountable
otherwise they're likely to give a little wrist slap and fine them the $75 MM in liability and be done with it.

8. They keep calling it a spill. A spill is a finite thing. This will
keep getting worse as long as the well is flowing.

18. and this will keep happening day after day after day ......
"clean up" the beaches and in w/ the next tide will be a new slug of oil.
Even if the gusher is plugged up right now for the next 50 days the oil will
be rolling in .....

thank you Sandra Day O'Connor for the vote that stopped the counting of the
vote in Florida 2000 ...... you made it possible for Dick Cheney to screw up
the supportive capacity of the planet.

Get your ass to the Gulf and see what you have wrought.

22. another "go shopping" message, only this time it's "go swimming"
Why not issue a message about preventing a spew like this in future, and BP should put all its money into stopping the spew instead of PR and ads?

Orange Beach is heavily developed with high rise condo's but there are area's set aside that can't be touched by developers. Orange Beach normally has sugar white sand and aqua colored water.
