BloombergJune 12 (Bloomberg) -- U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron “expressed his sadness” at the “human and environmental catastrophe” caused BP Plc’s oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in a phone call today with President Barack Obama.
“The President and Prime Minister agreed that BP should continue -- as they have pledged -- to work intensively to ensure that all sensible and reasonable steps are taken as rapidly as practicable to deal with the consequences of this catastrophe,” Cameron’s office in London said in an e-mailed statement after the two leaders spoke for more than 30 minutes.
Cameron came under pressure this past week from U.K. politicians and the media to defend London-based BP after escalating criticism in the U.S. of the company’s handling of the worst environmental disaster in the nation’s history. The cleanup costs and legal liabilities may reach $37 billion, according to Credit Suisse Group AG.
Obama told Cameron “that his unequivocal view was that BP was a multinational global company and that frustrations about the oil spill had nothing to do with national identity,” the prime minister’s office said.
