Piece of oil rig washes up on Florida beach
Source: AP

A piece of wreckage from the deepsea rig that exploded in April has washed up on a beach in Florida about 190 miles from the site of the disaster.

Bay County Sheriff Deputy Ray Maulbeck was working beach patrol Sunday morning when he came upon the stainless steel tank that had some oil oozing from it, along with barnacles and sea growth attached to it. The Coast Guard and state environmental officials were called in to investigate, and they took the piece away.

Maulbeck says the part had markings that identified it as having come from the Deepwater Horizon rig.

<snip>

Residents to that section of the beach say the tank first appeared last night and washed up to the shoreline over night. But no one reported it to authorities until mid morning today.

Eye witnesses tell newschannel seven the tank had BP identifying logos on it but those were promptly removed when crews arrived late this morning.

Its not known what is inside the tank but the Coast Guard, Bay County Hazmat Teams and The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission sealed off the area for a thousand feet after fumes from the tank were so noxious people began feeling ill.

Bay County EMS Ambulance units were sent to the scene to stand by but they apparently we not needed.

Even though Bay County Hazmat teams did some on the spot testing to see what was involved, Valerie Lovett, the County's Public Information officer, told NewsChannel Seven she couldn't say what it was.

After spending most of the day on the problem crews ended up loading the container onto a large truck with plans presumably to truck it to the Waste Management landfill near Campbellton in Jackson County.

In the meantime, the major question of what was in the tank, petroleum of dangerous chemical still remains unanswered tonight.

1. Is it odd that they took time to remove BP's logos from the tank?
I just find that really strange.

Also can't help but think that as the debris from that rig moves with the current, so does the goo.

2. After 50 days of being exploded, going through a fire and being washed by the Gulf, it still stinks
enough to make people sick.

And you are right, the stinky tank is at the head of the massive goo which is surely to follow and keep following. There's fifty days of the stuff following behind this beached find.

9. To Brit Hume: No Oil? Here is a piece of a fucking tanker floating ashore. Enough proof for ya?
Why did they remove the labels? My guess is that Fox will now say that they have not determined that it was from BP and they will have to send it out to a laboratory to verify that is where it came from.

13. this was done so that BP can deny it is theirs
BP reminds me of the evil trading company in those pirate movies that Johnny Depp starred in.

15. Or perhaps it was done so that BP can't deny it is theirs.
The logos may have been taken as evidence of ownership, before BP could get hold of it. It doesn't sound as if BP was part of the crews that were called. I wouldn't be surprised if the sheriff took some pics before the crews showed up, too. Of course, I'm just speculating, as we all are.

19. not really strange when you consider BP's PR has been its first priority
cleanup is secondary and preventing such a spill in the first place is an afterthought.

I sure hope they get sued for every penny in damages they have caused, and are causing.

Oil container washes ashore in Florida

(NECN/WMBB: Panama City, Florida) - Oil wasn't the only thing washing up onto Florida's coast Saturday.

A large oil container with BP markings on it was found on a portion of beach in Panama City. At this point, it's not clear if the container, which was leaking oil, came from the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig that exploded on April 20th.

Up until now, Panama City had not seen any tar balls or oil on its shoreline, according to a county spokeswoman.

The large stainless steel tank is about the size of a refrigerator.

It will be transported to Louisiana for investigation.

So now they're not sure.

Just like they weren't sure all the dead turtles, fish and dolphins washing up on shore were victims of BP's disaster.
