KY-Sen: Rand Paul inaccurately claiming to be board certified

Panel doesn't recognize Paul certification

The national clearinghouse for opthamologist board certifications says Rand Paul has not been certified for the past five years. Rand Paul has claimed to be board certified, but it turns out he is certified by a board (National Board of Opthamology) that he incorporated and heads, and of which his wife is vice-president. The CJ could only find seven opthamologists besides Paul who were members of or were certified by Paul's group, and all of them also had the "real certification" of the American Board of Opthamology.

.........

It seems that the American Board began requiring opthamologists to recertify overy 10 years, but the older opthamologists were grandfathered in so that they did not have to recertify. This angered Rand Paul and some young opthamologists, who decided to make their own board which requires everyone to recertify, young and old. While this "recertification for all" rule sounds fair to me, the American Board of Medical Specialties (which works with the AMA) did not recognize Rand Paul's group (for unknown reasons,) and so Paul had not had a nationally recognized certification for years. That hasn't stopped him from advertising to his patients that he is board certified.

Hospitals shouldn't be forced to have their doctors certified, right? Hospitals should not be forced to make sure their doctors have a license. It is completely up to them.

42. The federal government DOESN'T. The practice of medicine and licensing
thereof is regulated by the STATES.

And this ethical breach could endanger his licensure, depending on the state. It could also actually be a criminal or civil offense.

Where on earth did you get the cockamamie idea that the federal government had anything to do with medical licenses?

50. Actually in Paul's world
The Big Evil Government Boot of Oppression shouldn't force The Good Free Market Hospitals to make sure their doctors even went to school. (Random capitalization intentional.) This would solve the health care crisis because the Invisible Hand cures all it touches, even when you die because your doctor never read a medical textbook.

He does have an MD from Duke. The Daily Kos article says he has not been certified for 5 years. This really is deceptive. The real question is if his organization could give certification to any that could not have gotten it from the original group.

Nobody is disputing that doctors should be certified. I also agree that Lawyers should have to pass the bar and naturally everybody would agree with me. If I just made up my own bar exam and said that I passed the Bar, but was referring to my own bar exam, we would have a problem.

43. I'd calm down a bit... He was board certified at one time...
and his little stupid alternate certification group is a ridiculous, meaningless, and unprofessional response to his complaints against the official board for requiring re-certification for all-- while grandfathering older members.

Yes, there is some stink there, but it isn't as though he had not completed a recognized residency program and at one time been recognized via board certification by the official group..

Just sayin... It isn't quite as scandalous as some purport.

He did originally earn board certification by the "Official" certification group, the National Board of Opthamology... I'm not saying it isn't serious that he has not maintained that certification, but it is quite a different thing from saying he was claiming board certification that he NEVER earned (as some have mistakenly claimed)...

It would be a topic on all the nightly talking heads shows, with Chris Matthews declaring his campaign over and that he should bow out now and allow the runner-up, Fox News declaring this false certification should allow all his former patients to sue him and/or lock him in jail for life, etc.

O. P. H. T. H. A. L. M. O. L. O. G. I. S. T.

It's spelled correctly on Daily Kos, so I don't know why it's not in the OP.

Normally I don't pick nits on this stuff, but when I saw it repeatedly wrong in the OP I checked the DKos page to see if it was wrong there, too, and it wasn't. So somewhere along the way it was changed, and it shouldn't have been.

Words matter.

Hard to follow the article. Younger docs need to recertify every ten years. Was he originally board certified but didn't go along with the recertification? Older docs don't have to recertify.

73. Does this mean
he will no longer allow African American's eye conditions progress to total blindness? I just BET he's been refusing to treat black patients for years.

75. If it walks like a doc, talks like a doc and pretends to be certified; Its a quack.
why do pugs think they can get away with anything? Because they can......until a real journalist, who is not a quack, comes along.

83. Didn't Bill "The Cat Slayer" Frist have a problem like this?
(Gets off shiftless lazy ass and does her own research): Actually, it was a continuing education problem.

August 31, 2006: Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist will probably be fined and have to make up for failing to do continuing medical education that Tennessee requires of doctors with active licenses...a spokeswoman for the Tennessee Department of Health said...

In a license renewal form filed with the board earlier this year, Frist certified he had met the state’s continuing education requirement — 40 hours over the previous two years. In response to several inquiries from The Associated Press, however, the Tennessee Republican acknowledged Tuesday that he had not done all the work...

84. Well, he never said WHICH board, did he?
there are all kinds of boards--wood, Monopoly, corporate, etc. And a board Paul founded did certify him.

Soooo, the headline should not say "inaccurately." It should say "misleadingly."

87. Funny...If I claimed on my resume to be a member of a professional organization...
...and I wasn't, wouldn't that be enough to have my job application tossed into the trash?

88. oh who really cares...requiring doctors to be board certified...
Is just more govt. fascism :sarcasm:

This is more libertarian lunacy...doctors can't just do whatever they want without public assurance they know what they're doing.
