GRAND ISLE, La. -- The Coast Guard says it found a Florida-based shrimper working in an area closed because of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, confiscated 19,000 pounds of white shrimp and dumped it all back in the water.

Petty Officer Casey Ranel says 500 pounds of the shrimp were live, 500 pounds had just recently been de-headed, and 18,000 were frozen when returned to the water 13 miles south of Belle Pass.

A Tuesday news release says a Coast Guard crew from Grand Isle inspected the trawler Little Andrew on Sunday after getting a report that it was working in a restricted area.

Ranel says the boat's master, whom she identified as Dung Nguyen, was given a written warning. She says the trawler is registered in Panama City,

14. Crayfish are freshwater critters.
The oil's going to have a hard time spreading from the Gulf into freshwater.

A lot of Louisiana crayfish can tolerate a bit of salinity. Still, don't look for much of the crop to be polluted. Either the oil wouldn't get to where they live, or they'd die before being harvested.

As for why they're on special, it's possible (but no more than "possible") that nobody's buying them simply because they assume they're saltwater animals. I'll rule out the possibility that a huge percentage of the population suddenly decided to start keeping kosher.

11. I think it would be foolish to eat any seafood from the GOM.
Probably for a long time.

2. Desperation
I suspect in the future there'll be more of that. And seafoods will need to be tested which will make them all much more expensive.

5. Do they have a test for toxins they can do?
I saw where they were attempting to teach inspectors to visually detect the signs of oil, so I know they're doing visual checks. What I don't know is how they can feel confident a shrimp is toxin free by just visually inspecting it.

4. You can remove the outer shell and wash them, but you can't escape what they have
been ingesting the last ~2 months.

8. Its a crap-shoot to eat anything from the Gulf waters
There is a reason why we have the EPA & the FDA--to protect us from from tainted products/food/water. IMO it is beyond irresponsible to not test the seafood that is being caught in the "open" waters of the Gulf. Of course these people are desperate--but many of them continue to advocate for the drilling that is destroying their livelihoods. The entire situation is a major cluster-fuck of massive proportions.

Sad. :(

9. But the president says the Gulf's seafood is safe to eat!
:sarcasm:

Really, though, I feel for these fishermen. How do you feed your family if you can't fish? :(

10. Hmmm ... which is the worst bit of that article?
1) That there are people choosing to sail around and spread the oil even further?

2) That there are people catching 19,000 lb of white shrimp in a toxic zone?

3) That the fishermen would have been quite happy to sell that stuff if they hadn't been caught?

4) That 18,500 lb of dead white shrimp has been dumped in the water?

5) That the captain of the illegal fishermen was "given a written warning"?

12. A "written warning"?
That's the best they could do?

If they had found a spec of marijuana aboard, they would have shot the crew, sank the boat, and put any survivor's in prison for life.

13. Glad you picked that up..I sent that article out to many Dem's in Fla today and
I got so many responses ..about just that..A WARNING?? They all said ..well that makes way for other shrimpers to do exactly the same thing..because a WARNING will do nothing to stop desperate measures by desperate people..like shrimping when their boat mortgages are due??
And no help coming from our government or BP....
