Iraqi tribes end dispute over bride by using firearms

Two Iraqi tribes ended their dispute over a bride by using firearms and killing six people. A wedding procession came under fire in the Mosul suburb Albu-Saif, in the north of Iraq, on Tuesday.

According to police, six people, including three women, were killed in the attack.

The conflict was triggered by the bride�s tribe�s refusal to accept her marriage to a �stranger�. Under the local tradition a girl cannot marry a man from another tribe, if any man in her own tribe, however old, is willing to ask for her hand.

3. Sounds a bit extreme.

There's more to it because the dishonor of getting a "no" isn't all that huge if there was no expectation of it.

On the other hand, a lot of jihadis take "no" to be far more dishonoring, and certain tribes specialize in support for politico-religious causes. Or there may have been history between the tribes, so that this bride was payment or recompense for something else; perhaps the deal had been considered done and the bride backed out. Perhaps many other things.

Hard to know. Not enough information.
