Connecticut GOP AG Candidate Wants Gun Training For Kids (in schools)
Source: Hartford Courant

The Republican endorsed candidate for Connecticut attorney general is advocating firearms training to be taught to kids in schools, in scout groups and in summer camps.

Avon attorney Martha Dean says if elected she would explore expanding gun accident prevention programs and rifle club teams in schools.

Fellow Republican candidate Ross Garber on Monday assailed Dean's comments, which she made at a Second Amendment rally in April and stood by Monday. In that speech, Dean said schools teach sex education but "omit the most basic skill needed to exercise fundamental constitutional rights."

Garber says the office of attorney general should not be used to give guns to children or promote a social agenda.

3. News flash, scouts already learn marksmanship

And of course, Dean fails to say what kind of training kids in schools would receive- could have meant Eddie Eagle-

"If you see a gun:

STOP!
Don't Touch.
Leave the Area.
Tell an Adult.

Anyone may teach The Eddie Eagle GunSafe® Program, and NRA membership is not required. The program may be readily incorporated into existing school curriculum, taught in a one- to five-day format, and used to reach both levels or simply one or two grades. Materials available through this program are: student workbooks, 7-minute animated video (available on DVD or VHS), instructor guides, brochures, and student reward stickers. Program materials are also available in Spanish. "

7. You won't find NRA on any Eddie Eagle material, other than the teacher's guide.
And since it's not the National Eagle Foundation, I fail to see how your post makes any sense. ('Camel' being both a brand and a mascot.)

10. The gun industry, no.
Edited on Mon Jun-21-10 09:29 PM by X_Digger
As it relates to the OP, no more so than the scouts' marksmanship program aids the gun industry.

I know, I know, anything that puts guns in anything less than a butt-clenching fear perspective is abhorrent to some people.

Teaching gun safety no more promotes the gun industry than teaching safe sex promotes the condom industry.

Man can exist without guns. Procreation, not so much.

17. Would you rather a kid stumble upon a gun with fear and fascination rather than healthy respect?
Edited on Mon Jun-21-10 09:55 PM by X_Digger
Ignorance about gun safety is about as useful as abstinence only sex-ed.

We can remove the fascination with the forbidden, or just hope for the best. I know which one you're leaning toward.

22. Because gun safety = gun training, right?
Teaching kids to be safe around firearm is an ultimate public good. They should be taught that guns are potentially dangerous tools and should be treated with as much respect as dad's power tools. Accidental Gunshot deaths have been falling, but there's no reason that there should be any. Guns can be kept and used safely, without harming anyone or anything except for paper targets. I see no reason why a high-school freshman should not be taught to clear and make safe the various types of actions.

Because hey, if you don't care to, Hollywood will be happy to fill their head with crap that could get them or one of their friends killed.

25. gun training = gun safety
I'm not a gun nut but I do believe this is true just like drivers ed classes make young drivers safer. I was taught to shoot by my Mom who was a champion shooter in HS. The rifle team was supported by the NRA, which was, back in the 40's, not as batshit crazy as they are now.
