U.S. Census: Texas booms despite recession while Florida sags
Source: USA Today

The national recession can't stop Texas cities from growing. Four of the 10 fastest gainers -- including No. 1 Frisco -- are in the Lone Star State, according to Census population estimates out today.

But Florida cities that soared this decade are among the losers in the past year.

USA TODAY's Haya El Nasser reports that Texas escaped much of the downturn because of a diversified economy that includes oil and high-tech.

From 2008 to 2009, 11 of the nation's 25 fastest-growing cities with more than 100,000 people were in Texas.

"The star of the Sun Belt,'' says demographer William Frey, of the Brookings Institution. "It's big cities, it's oil, it's the suburbs. It's a diversified economy. People are moving there for high-skilled and low-skilled kinds of jobs.''

6. Ok. Let me ask you this, who the fuck has been "running" Texas.......
............now for almost 20 yrs? Texas has had two crazy as fucking shit Governors and from what I've read an Assembly that ain't much better. What is it that's said about Texas? "Low taxes, low services". The Rw's will be cowing about how GW and that crazy son of a bitch "hairy" Perry kept Texas "a-hummin" even though the rest of the states had job losses and business' closings. I don't listen to Limbaugh, but I can almost hear his crazy voice now praising the "conservative" governors and Legislature of Texas for their policies.

11. Let's look on the brighter side
All of Texas' major cities went blue in the last Presidential election. The influx on new people to the cities is actually diluting their vote. ;)

16. Yeah, okay. Hey pal, I lived in ILL for 54 yrs and now live in Ark, not......................
...............exactly a liberal enclave and Il not being the most "honest" of states. I don't like shitty policies no matter what "state" or "country" they originate in. Texas has some weird, shitty state policies like the "school book fiasco" for example.

19. Yes, I knew you would throw the textbook thing in
And I'm surprised you didn't mention secession. But hey, check out the new poll numbers in the governor's race. White and Perry are almost at a dead heat.

As I said, when good news comes about Texas, some here want to piss on it. They are filled with hate. I don't know if you have that same hate or not. If not, great. If so, then I feel for ya.

32. Wait for something negative
You know, the ones who start the OP with "Texas." That's when they love to pile on.

Remember when Houston elected a lesbian mayor? There were a lot of crickets from the bashers as well.

20. Well, I saw a census worker a while back stop at the house across the street
the side street that is as I'm on a corner lot...

Everyone was home but nobody answered the door when he knocked...I think only the kids and mom are here legally. Dad is a nice guy though. I helped him get his compressor working again last summer :)

He wants to move back. The auto industry is starting to do better so hopefully he'll be able to move back to MI soon.

26. Wouldn't pack up the moving van just yet....
much of the "recovery" has been due to the Big 3 shuttering the big Detroit area plants while keeping the lower-cost plants in the "right-to-work" states open. Just because they're doing better, doesn't mean they're going to open those plants again. Those jobs, I'm afraid, are gone forever.

10. Some things don't change.
I moved to Texas in 1980 because there were jobs to be had here (and no jobs to be found in my hometown of Midland, MI) -- and not much has changed between then and now. But I will say that Texas excels at job creation IN SPITE of its state government, not BECAUSE of it. Ann Richards was the last decent Governor we've had.

14. A growing population feeds on itself...
As the population grows, the economy booms, creating more jobs, causing others to want to move to Texas, and the population keeps on growing. It also helps that Texas is very cheap. The land and housing there, even in the big cities, is incredibly cheap relative to other cities. And it also helps that there is a large influx of illegal immigrants every year. They provide more consumers and more providers of very cheap labor, which just keeps the economy booming and prices low on a whole lot of things (housing among them).

The thing is, all this population boom is doing is turning the state bluer politically. Just look at North Carolina and Virginia. After decades of population boom, the pendulum swung. There is a reason the wealthiest states are among the bluest as well. And the wealthier Texas becomes, the bluer it gets. The more big cities it has and the bigger those cities get, the bluer it becomes. It also helps that the weather is nice, except for in the summer when it's hot as can be. But most people would rather deal with hot summers than cold winters.

The Repulbican Party is dying. They might think otherwise with this upcoming mid-term, but the reality is that it is a party based mainly on identity politics, and the demographics are changing. They'll be able to hold it off a while yet, especially in off year elections, because their base is much more organized and much more motivated to always vote, but they're slipping and they know it.

23. I doubt it
There are people on DU who have advocated that Detroit be completely abandoned and citizens be relocated to the south and west.

It's odd that you criticize others for the same thing you do. At least you acknowledge your hypocrisy.

33. I don't know what state gets the worst of it.
All the southern states get a hell of a lot of it, though. And when people are feeling particularly ornery they'll actually attack DUers for not "working hard enough" to turn their states blue. As if we can snap our fingers and give a million people an education. Or if we REALLY wanted to we could stand on the street corner and hand out great big bags of sense, but it just seems like too much work.

30. Doesn't change the fact...
that you were doing exactly what you criticize others of doing.

Would you be ok with the trash talk if people directed it at specific cities rather than Texas as a whole?

Lousy city? There you go again.

22. Curious isn't it, I've wondered how we have had it so good through this downturn
recession, depression for some...

Everyone I know who has been laid off has found a new job within 2 months.

I checked a while back and the top three states by GDP are California, Texas, and NYC in that order....

Why are we doing so much better than Cali and NYC I'm not sure. Cheaper housing has to be a big part of it. Your dollar goes a LOT farther in Texas.

31. They are also the top three states by population.
A per capita number would be a better indicator I would think.
