AP source: McChrystal has no sign he'll be fired
Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON – A senior U.S. military official in Afghanistan tells The Associated Press that Gen. Stanley McChrystal doesn't know whether he'll keep his job when he appears at the White House on Wednesday.

The official says the general has been given no indication that he'll be fired — but no assurance he won't be.

3. No worries
I laughed too.

It seems after McChrystal's aid got the axe there's a new level of fear over keeping ones lips from being too loose.

Such a helpful article. He doesn't know, they don't know, we don't know.

Great.

8. Really this Mc Chrystal is a complete failure
Edited on Tue Jun-22-10 11:59 AM by Hawkowl
He can't make the troop withdrawl deadline, he is losing the war (and was too fucking stupid to realize it wasn't winnable in the first place), and he is insubordinate and gives negative interviews to the press about the whitehouse.

Why is this fuck still on active duty, let alone commanding general of the whole shebang?

Every general is replaceable, and Obama should begin by firing a dozen or so and promoting hand picked worthy officers that are competent.
If Obama is such a devotee of Lincoln he should've fired him months ago.

9. He's done.
if Obama wants to maintain the integrity of the chain of command and respect for the mission he needs to fire him. And on the political front he won't be blamed for doing so. No one of consequence appears to be defending McChrystal.

14.  Old soldiers never die; they just fade away. General Douglas MaArthur
http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/d/douglas_macarthur_2.html

Hubris -- the common failure of great men.

McChrystal is a great man and a truly great soldiers. He sincerely wants to serve his country. But could his own hubris, his unwillingness to understand that the buck stops with Obama not with General McChrystal result in the end of his service to our country?

I am old enough to remember the story of General MacArthur. It was perhaps the actions of General MacArthur more than any other figure in American History since the Civil War that tore our country in two. It was his insistence on Defying the chain of command and refusing to cooperate with President Truman's decisions.

Was MacArthur right and Truman wrong? Quite possibly. We will never know for sure. But we do know that regardless of who as right or wrong, the decision was Truman's not MacArthur's. Here is the Wikipedia short, short version of the story. How many times have I seen the famous video of MacArthur

MacArthur was recalled to active duty in 1941 as commander of U.S. Army Forces in the Far East. A series of disasters followed, starting with the destruction of his air force on December 8, 1941, and the invasion of the Philippines by the Japanese. MacArthur's forces were soon compelled to withdraw to Bataan, where they held out until May 1942. In March 1942, MacArthur, his family and his staff left Corregidor in PT boats, and escaped to Australia, where MacArthur became Supreme Commander, Southwest Pacific Area. For his defense of the Philippines, MacArthur was awarded the Medal of Honor. After more than two years of fighting in the Pacific, he fulfilled a promise to return to the Philippines. He officially accepted Japan's surrender on September 2, 1945, and oversaw the occupation of Japan from 1945 to 1951. As the effective ruler of Japan, he oversaw sweeping economic, political and social changes. He led the United Nations Command in the Korean War from 1950 to 1951. On April 11, 1951, MacArthur was removed from command by President Harry S. Truman. He later became Chairman of the Board of Remington Rand.

. . . .

The Eighth Army pressed north again in February, inflicting heavy casualties and recapturing Seoul in March 1951. Allied leaders had to once more consider whether they wanted MacArthur to invade North Korea or seek a peace. On March 24, MacArthur called on China to admit that it had been defeated, simultaneously challenging both the Chinese and his own superiors. Then on April 5, Representative Joseph William Martin, Jr. revealed a letter from MacArthur critical of President Truman's limited-war strategy, providing copies of it to the press and reading it aloud on the floor of the house.<245> The letter concluded with:

It seems strangely difficult for some to realize that here in Asia is where the Communist conspirators have elected to make their play for global conquest, and that we have joined the issue thus raised on the battlefield; that here we fight Europe’s war with arms while the diplomats there still fight it with words; that if we lose the war to communism in Asia the fall of Europe is inevitable, win it and Europe most probably would avoid war and yet preserve freedom. As you pointed out, we must win. There is no substitute for victory.<246>
That day too, the Joint Chiefs of Staff drafted orders for MacArthur authorizing him to attack airbases in Manchuria and Shantung with nuclear weapons if Chinese air strikes originated from there.<247> The next day, April 6, Truman summoned Secretary of Defense George Marshall, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Omar Bradley, Secretary of State Dean Acheson and Averill Harriman to discuss what to do about MacArthur. The two generals were opposed to the idea of MacArthur's relief but Acheson was strongly in favor. The Joint Chiefs met on April 8 and agreed that MacArthur was not guilty of insubordination and had stretched but not violated any orders.<248> The Joint Chiefs concurred with but did not recommend MacArthur's relief, although they felt that it was correct "from a purely military point of view."<249> The next day Truman ordered MacArthur's relief by Ridgway. The order went out on April 10 with Bradley's signature. The relief led to a storm of controversy.<250> The fighting would go on until ended by the Armistice Agreement in July 1953.<251>

White House: Obama angry at McChrystal comments

WASHINGTON, June 22 (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama was angry about critical comments made by General Stanley McChrystal in a magazine report, and all options are on the table about the general's job, the White House said on Tuesday.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs, asked if McChrystal's job was safe, said there would be more to say after Obama met with the general in Washington on Wednesday.
