GOP sorry for 'chicken shack' quip about Ohio gov
Source: Associated Press

A spokesman for Republican Ohio gubernatorial candidate John Kasich is apologizing for taking aim at Gov. Ted Strickland's rural roots by saying he had "grown up in a chicken shack."

Spokesman Rob Nichols said Wednesday he shouldn't have referenced the Democratic governor's Appalachian upbringing when he criticized Strickland's handling of urban issues.

Nichols on Tuesday said, "Having grown up in a chicken shack on Duck Run, he has all but ignored our cities' economies and their workers."

Nichols said he realizes that the reference could be viewed as derogatory.

2. Now if it were Kasich
that grew up in a "Chicken shack" he'd be touting it to show he connects with "real Americans" like the ones Sarah Palin brags about - the ones in small towns with real American values. :eyes:

6. Sorta like Abe Lincoln's log cabin? Our roots make us individuals with
an understanding of what struggle is. I need my politicians to be "chicken shack" born.

7. I know a family that grew up in a chicken shack and AFAIK it's still there.
Offence can lie as much in the ear of the receiver as the mouth of the speaker.

And as Helen Thomas and others have learned to their detriment, it is that offence in the ear of receiver that destroys. Beck, O'Reily, Limbaugh and all their regional immitators can get away with spewing their bile, because the "ears" of the nation refuse to take offence.

10. My mother grew up in a sharecropper's shack.
I saw a picture of it once at my aunt's house, it really wasn't much bigger than the chicken coop. Front room, back room, kitchen and a back porch (not enclosed). Housed 12 kids (3 had moved on) and my grandparents at once.

15. Fact: Stickland DID live in a chicken coop after his family home burned down
Why would anyone mock a poor family's misfortune? How any "common" man/woman thinks that the GOP understands their hardships and is working for their interests amazes me.

17. Criticizing Appalachian Roots in Ohio is Pretty Stupid
Speaking as someone born in Ohio of Appalachian roots I think that may not be a wise strategy.
