iPhone 4’s first users report reception, color problems
Source: MSNBC

The first wave of iPhone 4 officially went on sale today and they are flying off store shelves. But some of that first-day fun is being spoiled by reports from frontline customers of issues with the brand new smartphone, including display discoloration and cell reception problems.

Users are reporting diminished or lost reception when they touch the stainless steel band around the iPhone 4's middle. This band doubles as the main structural element and the smartphone's antenna.

As evidenced in multiple videos posted to YouTube, when the iPhone 4 is gripped in such a way that skin touches this band, the signal strength bars appearing in the upper left corner of the screen drop within seconds.

The phenomenon is similar to that of a person standing near an old-school television antenna. The water-filled human body affects the incoming signal, though in the television's case the signal tends to be improved, Wired reports.

Sounds like a MAJOR problem.

2. Don't worry, the fanboys are claiming these problems are overblown
As usual.

Meanwhile the MSM keeps on giving Apple its typical free, day-long, 100% positive advertisement. New products are launched every day, but apparently no other company qualifies.

12. Jealous of what?
I'm not a slave to the cellphone. I don't own an iPhone or a phone made by any of their competetors.

19. Actually your snark isn't that far off..
The smart-phone culture would likely benefit from taking a step back and looking closely at their addiction.

You don't have to be connected 24/7 to be happy or successful, and you certainly don't need to always own the latest gadget to be "cool".

21. Your observations and suppositions are very far off.
You give advice as if you know me. You pontificate upon that which you do not know.

Not knowing seems to be what you do best. You don't have to be condescending and self-righteous to be an ass, but it does go a long way.

You don't know anything about my phone or my life. But that doesn't keep you from spouting piffle.

So tell me though. Have you given up technology? You walk instead of ride? You grow your own food? You make your own clothes? I know others that would tell you that the product culture would likely benefit from a step back to look closely at their addiction to worldly goods. Your piffle is much like theirs.

I suppose you are at the library a lot. Of course you don't own a phone or computer so you must be hanging 24/7 at the free computers at the library.

Is that what makes you so "cool"?

22. I never said I hate technology.
And I never said I wasn't addicted to the Internet or computers.

My comments are about our culture in general, not you. Get over yourself.

23. Advice for yourself?
How smug to tell someone to get over themself after you take it on yourself to lecture him on how he ought to behave and how he ought to confront the world. No your ego doesn't stop there. You now say you weren't telling me how to behave, but the whole world. You are the one with the exactly right amount of technology use. You don't have a smart phone so that is too much. But you use computers so that is alright. Only you have the exactly perfect balance to your life. You comment on the whole culture and how it need to reflect on the error of its ways.

Then you tell me to get over myself. Now who needs to examine their motives and life? Grab a little perspective about your overinflated place in the world.

All cool people buy everything Apple offers, no matter how overpriced and overhyped.

24. Your sarcasm says you believe that the cool people,
in which number you of course count yourself, avoid all apple products because only the masses use them. Then of course you buy computers, mp3s, phones, etc. that are derived from Apple products. How much cooler it must be to only live off of the ideas of others.

3. Both are reported to be temporary bugs
1)No one can verify that there is any "real" signal strenght issues caused when holding the phone. Conflicting reports abound right now. I assume Apple will address this this week.

2)The "color" issues is explained here.
http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/24/iphone-4s-yellow-spot-issue-goes-away-with-a-bit-of-time

"Apple is using a bonding agent called Organofunctional Silane Z-6011 to bond the layers of glass. Apparently, Apple (or more likely Foxconn) is shipping these products so quickly that the evaporation process is not complete. However, after one or two days of use, especially with the screen on, will complete the evaporation process and the yellow "blotches" will disappear. How do I know? I was involved in pitching Z-6011 to Apple."

15. Ahh. But it is fodder for the knee jerkers.
They wait by their old green-phospor monitors for days on end, waiting for something bad about Apple. Then they spring into jump mode. It is their only pleasure.

16. Got mine via FedEx yesterday
and it works just fine. Haven't had a problem yet, EXCEPT with the voice recognition, which can't understand me I guess, due to my accent. I ask 'it' to play a song by The Beatles and I get ABBA....

But so far so good. I also shot a video of my cat sleeping and it looked excellent.

17. Meh, I like my rooted moto droid with 2.2 and flash.
The mobile hotspot and tethering functions for free are awesome too. Oh, i'm overclocked at 1ghz as well.

I wouldnt mind a front facing camera, but i'll wait until verizon/moto come up with one. Should be soon, as a new droid seems to be released every month. Dunno how apple plans to keep up with that in the long run......
