House fails to extend jobless benefits
Source: CNN

Washington (CNN) - The House of Representatives failed Tuesday to pass a bill that would extend long-term unemployment benefits through the end of November.

The legislation would have made the benefits effective retroactively, allowing those who may have been cut off from unemployment insurance at the end of May to collect those federal payments.

The House last month approved an extension of unemployment benefits in a larger package that also included an extension of health care insurance for the unemployed and some popular tax breaks, but that package is stalled in the Senate.

"We believe that passing unemployment insurance is critical for individuals, for families, for communities, for the country and for the economy," House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Maryland, said at his weekly session with reporters.

1. House rejects extension of unemployment benefits
Source: Associated Press

"WASHINGTON — The House has rejected an extension of unemployment benefits because of concerns about the growing national debt, meaning payments will continue to phase out for more than 200,000 people a week.

The last extension expired at the end of May. House Democrats said more than 1 million people who have been laid off for long stretches have already lost benefits.

The bill would have extended benefits through the end of November, at a cost of $33.9 billion.

Democrats brought up the bill under a special procedure in which no amendments were allowed and debate was limited. Under the procedure, the bill needed a two-thirds majority to pass."

7. Part of the package is tax credit extension
for real estate sales that were supposed to close by June 30 to qualify. Title and mortgage companies are all backed up with tens of thousands of transactions that won't close in time. They've pulled it from the package with Congress supposed to vote on the stand alone extension tomorrow. The president will probably sign it before midnight tomorrow if it passes. Then us Realtor folks can breathe again. If repugs stop this extension, they will piss off a lot of repug Realtors. My office is full of them.

11. Are you sure you're thinking of the right bill?............
Here's the text of H.R. 5618, and it mentions nothing about real estate or Realtors. I could be wrong, but I don't see it.

8. This is pathetic!
The GOP (aided and abetted by a few so called Democrats) is becoming more and more brazen in their display of utter contempt for the average American.

The worst thing is knowing that the majority of these bottom feeders will continue to be re-elected by the very people being ruined by their sleaze ball political moves.

Pawns, worker bees, sacrificial lambs and the American working class have become one group thanks to the politicians entrusted to protect and promote the "American Dream".

16. Red State Democrats
Some red state democrats are so afraid of losing their seats that they act more like republicans than democrats and really there is not much we can do about it because unless a red state democrat is bold about their convictions they will lose and most are weak kneed anyway and too afraid to speak up and risk being seen as a liberal.

20. Pennsylvania is full of them.
Technically we're considered a blue state since Pres. Obama won PA and we do have a (D) Governor (for the time being) and two (D) Senators. Of course that could change this year.

Most of the state is heavily Republican once you get away from Pittsburgh and Phiadelphia. A lot of the Democrats in the remainder of the state act very much like Republicans.

The term "Liberal" is veiwed as a perjorative in much of the state so all the politicians do whatever thay can to avoid that label becoming affixed to them.

9. This isn't over yet...
From the story:

"House Ways and Means Chairman Sander Levin told reporters Democrats will put the same bill back on the floor Wednesday and predicted it will pass. Levin also said he's in discussions with Senate leaders about a vote in the Senate on the bill."

10. House to vote again tomorrow; only simple majority needed; expected to pass. Link:
Bloomberg:
U.S. House Rejects Bill to Restore Unemployment Aid
http://noir.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=a0gjmCF72sQk&pos=8

House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Sander Levin, a Michigan Democrat, said the same bill would be brought up tomorrow under regular procedures requiring a simple majority for passage. He predicted it would win approval.

“We will not abandon these families,” Levin said before today’s vote, as he urged support for the bill.

17. I hope this eventually passes

Because people are really angry about this and it would be a mistake for democrats to be frighted my Republican and tea party talking points about the budget and vote with the republicans against unemployment benefits.

If there are only 5 jobs and 100 people, 95 people are still going to be unemployed which means there is no way to earn a living or bring income regardless of the budget.

The budget be damned in times of high unemployment or when there is a chance that people might be homeless or hungry because of lack of job availability.

25. That's the problem that seems to get ignored
Even if people were to accept whatever position at whatever pay level, there are NOT ENOUGH JOBS for every unemployed person out there. Just do the math. Not extending unemployment until they get a longer term fix will just destroy millions of families and thousands of communities.

I know we'll never have full employment, but keeping unemployment at 10% will keep us this in a morass for decades. Just look at Japan.

12. So, why does the House keep bringing the issue up when it's the SENATE that keeps blocking it/them?
I don't understand. Even if they pass one tomorrow, it STILL has to go to the Senate and we know those assholes aren't interesting in helping the needy (just the unneedy greedy fuck faces)

14. I hate how they keep citing PAYGO...........
First, all 40 GOP Senators voted against PAYGO, but they seem to love it now. Second, why is this not considered emergency spending as the amount of folks cut off is reaching ridiculous levels.

Wrap your head around this chart (sorry for the .pdf, I couldn't find a .jpeg):

http://waysandmeans.house.gov/media/pdf/111/UI_Impact_Chart.pdf

It shows that if UI is not extended, over 3 million people will lose their benefits by July 31, 2010.

26. There seems to be some interest in the Senate
for passing a bill that just covers unemployment without anything else tacked on to it. I think Snow said she would go for it, but with Byrd passing, we are one more behind. I really think the $25 per week additional payment is gone.

I got the mortgage covered this month, but if they don't pass something, I don't know how I'll make next month. You'll definitely see another wave of foreclosures for all those who managed to hang on after the first wave -- and this one will hit those who weren't part of the real estate bubble.

I am so sick of my life being a pawn in this political game. I've done nothing but play by the "rules," and yet I'm drowning like millions of others and no one in D.C. seems to care.

13. It infuritates me that Gulf vets have been hit the hardest by unemployment
When the Senate turned down the legislation last week, I made damn sure I told several of my patients all about it when I pulled my shifts at the VA hospital and I made damn sure that they knew that every damn Rethug had voted against it. A few got defensive, but most had "what do you expect from those fuckers" responses. I called Kay Bailey Hutchinson's office and John Cornyn's offices as well and told them the factoid that vets are hit the hardest by unemployment and they gave me the spiel about the deficit. I gave them the spiel about going to every VFW outpost in San Antonio, Corpus Chrisit, Austin and San Marcos with a list of the idiots who voted against veterans and their secretaries sounded a bit more worried, but the assholes will still vote against our vets. God, why don't they just all rapture already and leave us the hell alone to make the world a better place? This country is in the shape it's in because of the damned Republican party and the last Republican president.

voted for bailing out bankers, tax cuts for the wealthy, and caps on oil companies liability? I'd wager all of them did.

22. Repubulicans brought up the deficit by a TRILLION with their war and still support the war machine
even though they can't answer sanely why we're even at war.

Yet they let Americans go without health care, jobs, and unemployment funds.

Dispicable - but that's an "as usual".

Why should the unemployed get insurance payouts when there are banks and investment houses that may still want a bit more bailout money.

27. Just take it out of petty cash
from the perpetual war budget of over $1,200,000,000,000...

That would be a win-win -- more bang for the buck in the GDP (much better multiplier factor) and less money for murderous war toys...
