Japan's big four car makers issue over 100,000 recalls

TOKYO — Car makers Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors will recall more than 100,000 vehicles in Japan due to defective air bags and seat belts, the transport ministry said Wednesday.

The recalls trace back to a single supplier, Tokyo-based parts maker Takata, local media reported. The company also supplies Audi, Daimler, Chrysler, Ford and General Motors.

Toyota Motor will recall 50,738 vehicles, Honda 24,522, and Nissan 35,964 built in 2000-2001 due to problems with the airbag inflator in the passenger seat that causes shards to fly out when the airbag opens, the ministry said.

The recalls affect vehicles built in 2000-2001 including Toyota's popular Corolla, Honda's Fit and Nissan's Cube.

I imagine people with kids etc. care a whole lot about seatbelts working.

I mean, most people WANT cars without properly working seatbelts and air bags.

Glad someone posted this or I would have missed it.

And they are just NOW recalling them. How long did they know they had a problem? Why did they wait so long. Didn't quality control check them before installing these defective parts?

US car makers USED to make ALL their own parts except rubber.

And you might look up the most USA made car. It isn't a USA brand. But I'm not doing your home work for you.

A very good question but one that might take a bit of digging to answer.

Wonder if it's anything to do with fatigue from sub-spec manufacture?
If so, this simply might not appear until the car is several years old.

Outsourcing ... the fan that spreads the sh*t the furthest ...

This part outsourcing is gettin kinda scary...We will not be able to buy ANY brand of Automobile without worring if it has smoe defective "Out of Country" made parts...This Sux!

Limited sourcing means that a production flaw affects massive numbers of companies... if the part was made in the US, but shipped to all the Japanese companies, same problem... it's not an outsourcing issue, it's a limited-sourcing issue.
