BDNUGUSTA, Maine — A witness says Maine law enforcement officers shot an armed man within sight of the entrance of the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center at Togus.
Police officers descended on the area late in the morning in the outskirts of Augusta. Togus spokesman James Doherty said employees of the Veterans Affairs hospital reported hearing gunshots in the woods.
A witness, Paul Stevens, tells The Associated Press that officers fired on a man armed with what looked like a rifle. He says eight to 10 shots were fired, and the man fell to the ground in the woods off Route 17.
Wardens, local police and a state police tactical squad are on the scene.
Police had no comment.
