Iran backs down over stoning execution

Iran has backed down in the face of rising international outrage and announced that an Iranian woman convicted of alleged adultery will be spared execution by stoning.

A terse press release issued by the Islamic Republic’s Embassy in London stated that “according to information from the relevant judicial authorities in Iran will not be executed by stoning punishment”.

The statement left it unclear whether Ms Ashtiani, who has already received 99 lashes for her alleged crime, would be spared or executed by hanging instead. The embassy spokesman did not return calls.

1. I hope they spare her life...
But death by stoning is just plain barbaric, no two ways about it.

I'm really pleased that they felt and yielded to public outrage.

3. They were getting a lot of pressure internally, too
Most people in Iran are young people and they want to get out of the thirteenth century and join this one. The proposed execution method outraged them as much or more than it did us.

...........behead you or electrocute you or lethal inject you or fucking shoot you. We're abhorred here in the US over this, but look at us. We have the worlds most prisoners and maybe don't hold the execution record but we're sure as hell trying. Praise Jesus!!!!!!!

Yet why is the response inversely proportional to the severity?

Because it is unclear to me. Also, stoning is worse than being waterboarded, not that either is a walk in the park...also only one is lethal. (You seem to be implying the inverse which would be factually incorrect.)

14. My point is that stoning is about as bad as torture gets, but not that many seem to care.

Waterboarding, in comparison, gets tons more press and far more outrage.

I suspect that the selectivity in condemnation follows political rather than humanitarian lines.

It's too bad. If stoning attracted as much bad press and condemnation as waterboarding, it's likely it could be diminished or ended, at least as a state-sanctioned activity.
