Guillermo Zuloaga, critic of Venezuela president, in US
Source: bbc

A fugitive critic of the Venezuelan government, Guillermo Zuloaga, has appeared in the US to denounce what he says is political persecution.

Mr Zuloaga owns Globovision, the only television channel to remain openly critical of the government.
...
"We have come to find the justice we cannot find in Venezuela," Mr Zuloaga said in an interview with Globovision from outside the commission.

"Let them come here and prove that we have committed any crime".

1. I'm sure he will find justice here
As soon as he meets with the CIA and they develop a plan to take back the country.

2. Strange. Oliver Stone was on with Hartmann yesterday
Edited on Sat Jul-10-10 06:42 AM by Doctor_J
He said that there are 48 TV stations in Venezuela. 2 of them are public, and Hugo uses them to speak to the public. He has to, because the other 46 are privately owned, and broadcast nothing but right-wing anti-government swill (Stone likened them to Fox News).

Zuloaga is a right-wing fascist whose anti-Chavez lies are being spread by the G20 media machine

3. Absolutely right. That's the reality. We get this swill because they are producing it 24/7.
Anyone can take a look at their newspapers and figure this out for him/herself.

People who've been there, or people who have researched also know what the situation is. Only the liars will claim otherwise.

There's really no excuse for anyone to keep cranking out that same old spin we've heard from the day he was inaugurated, in February 1999. People who haven't figured it out yet are just plain slooooowwwww.

4. Thanks Doctor J for quoting that.
I listen to Thom yesterday and couldn't remember the number.

But this private ownership of our media by corporate right-wing idiots seems to be everywhere. It is not peculiar to America.

Oliver Stone seems to be saying that despite the prevalence of FAKE media, a media manipulated and owned by neocon corporate fascists, despite this, South America seems to be having a socialist revolution. I wish we could join.

That silly little poll that said most people thought Obama was a socialist, shows how ignorant US citizens have become.

7. The majority of the Venezuelan national TV stations are public and pro-government
TV stations in Venezuela : facts, not rumors

9 nationwide open air television networks (other regional and community networks share very small crumbs of the audience)

6 of them are state-owned and completely pro-government:
VTV
TVes
ViVe
Vale TV
Telesur

4 of them are private:
Venevision (recently congratulated by Chavez because of the "neutral position" it has kept for the last 3-4 years)
Meridiano TV (sports)
Televen (mildly opposition)
Globovision (openly opposition)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television_in_Venezuela

It's a remarkable irony to see Oliver Stone talking about media machines spreading lies.

9. What is ironic is people who have witnessed our country's
brutal, violent interference in CA, SA, and elsewhere over the past 40 years believe that we're not funding and otherwise promoting the opposition to the VEN populist movement.

But it sounded like 46 to me.

17. O. Stone said there were 2 public TV stations when in reality there are 6
which means the majority of the TV stations countrywide are state-owned and pro-government. Nothing more, nothing less. There are 58 regional networks and many are public too.

Concretely, what are you trying to say?

5. Reminiscent of Chile '73 and the use of the "El Mercurio" media chain to overthrow Allende.
Edited on Sat Jul-10-10 07:06 AM by leveymg
Some things just never change. I'd be curious to find out if Globovision runs footage of animals being slaughtered interlaced with clips of Chavez? Lots of killer robot Science Fiction stuff? Unsubstantiated reports about foreign spy plots and terrorist threats to the armed forces? That was part of the CIA-designed psyops program that generated the coup in Chile - actually, that's a lot like the Fox channel in DC!

He probably knows in his heart that he will at some point meet the same fate as Allende, from the same murderous forces. Props to him for doing his best for the Venezuelans until the Iron Heel comes down.

19. Coincidence ?
Edited on Sat Jul-10-10 11:23 AM by rabs

The Salvadoran terrorist Chavez Abarca captured a last week in Caracas (extradited to Cuba this week) confessed that he was to meet with three unnamed Venezuelans to create an atmosphere of chaos leading up to the parliamentary elections in September.

Venezuelan government authorities are looking for Chavez Abarca's three contacts. All of a sudden Zuloaga shows up in Washington. One of the three ??? Or mere coincidence?

Zuloaga is a fugitive from Venezuelan justice. The United States has an extradition agreement with Venezuela. So, were Venezuela to ask for his extradition ???

20. Hmm I don't know, I don't see Zuloaga acting at that precise level with terrorists like Posada
Moreover, Zuloaga said he wasn't going back to Venezuela as soon as the mandate against him was issued, didn't he?

21. Zuloaga has been on the lam for over a month

so it struck me as sort of odd that he would show up in Washington at this precise time. Wonder if he got out through Colombia?

As for directly associating with the likes of Posada, I tend to agree with you, but people like him usually resort to underlings so as to have "plausible deniability." Kinda like the layers of an onion.

Incidentally, don't the legal charges against Zuloaga and his son have to do with hoarding Toyota vehicles illegally at dealerships they own, and not precisely political?

Bueno, it is time for the "charruas" to spank the alemanes in the World Cup. Later.

27. The charruas were heroic
and they played a great game. They really should have won it if their goal keeper had been a tad more prudent.

Indeed, Zuloaga and his son's legal charges come from the Toyota hoarding case... which is like one year old? Now everything got reactivated when the state retired all its assets from the bank (Banco Federal) of his Globovision's associate, Mezerhane. It caused the bank to default on the legal ratio and justified its legal intervention. Now, if the State takes control of Zuloaga and Mezerhane's properties (who also ran), Globovision will become the 7th public TV. Let's see...

26. Poor, poor Zuloaga. He's in Washington D.C. because Hugo's a bad, bad man.
He's being persecuted for telling the truth, poor, poor Zuloaga. He doesn't know about any illegal business transactions. Chavez is just being mean to him.

28. Criminal on the lam brags "come and get me"
Should Venezuela offer safe haven for US tax dodgers in return? Perhaps Posada, international terrorist, can provide some helpful hints to Zuloaga on expat criminal life in the US.
