Neb. Dems have governor candidate

By Kevin Cole

Nebraska Democrats have a candidate for governor.

Mike Meister, a 49-year-old Scottsbluff attorney, said Sunday he will allow his name to be placed in nomination for governor next weekend at the state Democratic Convention in Columbus. Meister will make a formal announcement Monday at 2 p.m. MDT in Scottsbluff.

Meister, who previously ran for state office in an unsuccessful bid for attorney general in 2002, said he finalized his decision to run Friday after hearing Gov. Dave Heineman propose a two-day furlough for state employees at the end of 2010. He called the move "political smoke and mirrors'' that will do nothing to solve the state's budget problems.

Snip: Meister is stepping up to give the Democrats a nominee for governor after Omaha investment banker Mark Lakers dropped out of the race July 2 amid an investigation into his campaign financial reports. He ran for attorney general against Jon Bruning in 2002.

1. I'm in NE and I'll sure as hell vote for him!
Heineman is popular, but people are seriously pissed out here. Ben Nelson has most NE D's ready to roast him after we fought like hell to get him re-elected.

2. Howard Dean is needed back at DNC...
There should NEVER be a case where there is no Democratic candidate for a major office. No doubt they'd have scrounged some "moderate" up if someone with Cynthia McKinney's politics had filed for the primary, I'm sure...
