White not planning to attend Obama’s Texas fundraisers
Source: Austin American-Statesman

As I reported last night on the Postcards blog, Democratic sources say President Barack Obama will be in Austin and Houston on Aug. 9 for a pair of fundraisers. And Democratic gubernatorial nominee Bill White doesn’t plan to be there.

Said White spokeswoman Katy Bacon, “That week is jam packed, and he’s not scheduled to be in Houston or Austin at all except for the night of the 12th. In August, Bill will be talking with Texans about the future of our state, laying out his plans for the same.”

The president’s approval numbers aren’t good in Texas, and Gov. Rick Perry has repeatedly sought to link Obama and White.

The Austin event will raise money for the Democratic National Committee and the Houston event for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. An e-mail that’s circulating about the Austin fundraiser says it will be held at the Four Seasons.

1. John Trever of the Albuquerque Journal captured the situation in today's cartoon.

2. In half this country....
...the n******'s toxic. 'Socialism', 'big government' -- it's all bullshit.

I still wake up and can't believe he got elected.

White needs ca. 30% of the non-minority vote to win. Every vote he gets from standing next to Obama's balanced by two he loses.

Is it fair? No. Is it principled? No. Is it cowardly? Yes. Is it pandering to the worst in us? Yes.

But anything you do in politics that isn't based on the premise that people, especially in the aggregate, are shits, is doomed to fail.

People in the aggregate are shits and enough of them as individuals to make getting out of bed some days a battle.

3. I'm in Texas and the "stoopid" here is just mind blowing
I really think Bill White has a chance because, believe it or not the trend is going towards Democrats in the large cities, Houston, Dallas and especially in the Rio Grande Valley and east in Beaumont. I'll be out there voting.

6. White is screwing up!
I support Bill White and I will vote for him,
but I think that he forgot that over 3.5+ million Texans voted for Obama!
White needs to do some big rallies with Obama especially in Dallas, Houston, and Austin!

15. Agreed,
I'm in liberal El Paso, but most ppl I know outside of there hate the President. So I can't blame White for saying no to Obama.

That said, I want a real governor for once!!! Go White!!!

7. White just lost the election
It might be close, but he just alienated his base, and that will be the group that matters.

14. I disagree - the base here in Tejas know what's at stake
Gov Goodhair needs to be tossed out and for Texas Democrats, that is Agenda Item #1.

The state is trending Democratic but the angle of the curve is gradual. If White loses this election, then then next cycle or two will produce a Democratic Governor.

I doubt if more than a very few would vote against White in a fit of pique over this.

16. By running from Obama
he just alienated the black vote, and that is a core part of the base. I'd love to be wrong.

18. I do think your wrong on this.
Many of my black coworkers have expressed the same disappointment in some of his policy decisions that white supporters have expressed. They know that the State race for Governor is not a referendum on Obama. It's all about getting rid of Gov Goodhair, who is a douchebag extraordinnaire.

Texas is slowly trending Democratic due the changing demographics. As the white majority is transforming into a more multicultural mix in terms of demographic composition, the political culture is slowly trending towards Democrats. It is a glacial pace for Texas Democrats, we want it to change sooner rather than later. If White doesn't win this election cycle, it is destined to happen in the next cycle or two. It's almost inevitable.

I think White's decision to not appear with the President will not have an effect on the Governor's race. I couldn't imagine any of my black friends voting for Perry, he's a W clone.
If this was a presidential election cycle then your assertion might have more truth to it, but not this one.

12. I'm sure that will do him so much good
I'm sure that will cause legions of white male fundamentalist Southern Baptist Obama haters to give Bill White a fair hearing ad maybe, think about considering possibly voting for him.

Tool.
