`Progressive' Lawyers Organize in D.C.

`Progressive' Lawyers Organize in D.C.

WASHINGTON -- Liberals watched anxiously as the Federalist Society rose from a loosely organized conservative legal organization on a few law school campuses to become a Washington powerhouse with influence in the White House, Congress and various federal agencies.

Now they are fighting back.

The American Constitution Society for Law and Policy is having a coming-out party this week. For three days starting Friday, law students and attorneys will hear speeches by Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y.; attend discussions on the environment, abortion, gay rights, government surveillance, human rights and other subjects; and mingle with dozens of top legal scholars and judges.

It's not all heavy lifting. There also is a Janet Reno Dance Party on Saturday night.

4. why is "progressive" always quoted?
Personally, I think "progressive" should be quoted no more than the word "conservative" is. The media insist on calling certain people "liberals." I'm a progressive, not a liberal.

14. the same reason they always have to put "unabashed" or
"unashamed" before "liberal" - it makes me NUTS. They never say "he's an unabashed conservative."

5. Editorial in yesterday's paper......
decried "politcs" in judical nomination process. Written by two 'professors' from Ave Maria Law School! Ave Maria is reich-wing nut-job "Catholic Law" school founded by Domino's founder. Editorial presented it as straight opinion. Should have posted disclaimer recognizing school's fascist agenda. Federalist Society, and right-wing law "schools" are worst enemy our Constitution faces. Hope the progressive lawyers garner enough support to counter the Fat Tony's and Ken Starr's holding us hostage!

15. Agreed
I am glad that the left is finally trying to build the networks that the right created. Hopefully what worked for them wil work for us.

8. How about a little immediate action, legal eagles?
Edited on Thu Jul-31-03 01:51 PM by TacticalPeak
Notice how little Larry Klayman (& sierra club?) did to Unka Dick what a whole branch of government could not? Can't believe I'd ever tip my hat to him, but tip-o-the-hat, Larry. I like the taste and want more.

I noticed in a thread here where the Patriot Unspeakable Act was quoted from a section the poster thought applied to the outing of Amb Wilson's wife. In stating exceptions, like what was ok to out, it mentioned something like evidence entered by "civil plantiff".

"Civil plaintiff"? IANAL, but I can dream, ok? It would be sweet to cut them with the sword they've stuck in us. There may be some nooks and crannies in that opus that prove susceptible to the intentionalist fallacy.

I can work up a nice daydream of some of these crooks qualifying for "terror war" treatment, a la the two high, WH types who went a bridge too far with Wilson. Is citizen civil action possible?

A mighty head of steam could be built from FOIA, show-cause, discovery (even if a case is weak, when it's in the door: delicious discovery!). I know, they'll fight and fight, but remember Larry. We just have to fight, too.

on edit - Hell, just filing something juicy shows up for 1 or 2 cycles.

11. the ebb and flow of organizing & the political landscape
Nearly all political historians will date the rise of the right to the horribly failed presidential bid of Goldwater. That's 40 years of the right rising ... and peaking. I firmly believe that, if there are honest historians in 50 years, and if we do not descend into outright martial law, the high point of the repug rise will be shutting down the government under Newt. The impeachment was the first step down. Their power grabs since 2000, while currently effective, have been desperate and, in the process, they've done more to kickstart the left's organizing than anything else.

That's what I think on my good days, in response to good stories like this.

12. Yes, on the good days
Edited on Thu Jul-31-03 06:50 PM by scarletlib
Most other days I go into a pit of black despair -- afraid we will never see another good thing happen in this country again. I am afraid of what world my little 5 yr old grandson will inherit. Will there be clean air, water and a viable ecosystem teeming with life. Will he live in a just society? I hope my daughter who is currently childless will not have any children.

On edit: It's these groups, ACLU, PFAW, DU, etc that gives me hope.

17. I do agree they are
grasping at power desperately. The nakedness of their actions lately make me believe they think they are going to lose or the know they CAN'T lose (thanks to diebold and es&s).
