Senator Roy Ashburn, the California state senator who was arrested for driving under the influence after leaving a gay bar in March apologized on Monday for the harm he has caused the LGBT community.

He wrote a formal apology letter on GayPolitics.com

“I am sincerely sorry for the votes I cast and the actions I took that harmed lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. Just as important to me, I am sorry for not stepping forward and speaking up as an elected official on behalf of equal treatment for all people,” he wrote. “I chose to conceal who I truly am and to then actually vote against the best interests of people like me.”

Being in the closet and denying who you are does all sorts of bad things to you over time. No doubt the GOP will toss this brave person under the hate bus.

We all fell a little glee when GOP hypocrisy is exposed...but...

I feel good that this man took the brave step and accepted himself and realized that his own homophobia was tainting his votes.

5. or the Congressman from Florida Mark Foley and......
the fake reporter/ Real gay prostitute, in the White House, Jeff Gannon

Bob Allen, the member of the Florida House of Representatives Soliciting for oral sex in a mens room

The former New York Mayor who dresses up in drag Rudy Giuliani,

Glenn Murphy Jr.Chairman of the Clark County Republican Party whogot a fellow Young Republican drunk and then spent the
night at his house. The other young man woke up in the middle of the night
to find Murphy giving him mouth-to-penis resuscitation

Jim West, Spokane Mayor. Supported a bill, which failed, would have barred gays and lesbians from working in schools, day-care centers and some state agencies. Voted to bar the state from distributing pamphlets telling people how to protect themselves from AIDS. Proposed that “any touching of the sexual or other intimate parts of a person” among teens be criminalized. Had a sexual affair with an 18 year old boy

Come to think of it, The republicans have more gays amongst themselves than the entire cast of "A Chorus Line"

3. This owning up may be great, in and of itself.
But having had this cro-magnon ass hat as a rep for years (and I have to laugh as I think of the STAUNCHLY Rightist constituents that kept electing this faker!), I can tell you it was enough to spread shame on me that folks might surmise I walked and talked like him just because I was in his district!

Congressdunce, Devin Nunes is running to be our federal house rep, unapposed again. He's unapposed because there's no chance of adequate funding for a contender. Truly despicable. When the HELL are we gonna get real and meaningful campaign finace reforms??? :grr:

9. One does wonder if this is too little, too late. After all....
...his political career is over so he loses nothing in owning up to his sexual orientation and admitting that what he did was hypocritical and hurtful. I wonder if he'd be as forthcoming with an apology if he could have just kept being elected by those same constituents, ones who wanted him to vote the way he voted and would expect him to keep voting that way.

But hey, it's better than nothing, I guess.

None of the typical cynical hedging one would expect from a politician.

And to their spouses or partners in sham heterosexual relationships. As when the denying, closeted person offloads blame for their lack of attraction to their partner onto them, and allows them to stay in the belief that it's their fault, feeling punished, bewildered, and twisting in the self-blame, trying endlessly to find some way to make up for it or fix the situation.

15. yes....it is a new tragedy...even if the outcome ends well...
Edited on Wed Jul-21-10 02:35 PM by Evasporque
With full disclosure, acceptance, remorse and forgiveness...the damage is still done. Living with the paradox of a damaged life that harmed others and yet created a family with times of happiness and satisfaction is something that is unbearable.

there is no going back...we can only hope his example (and my own) helps foster understanding and compassion for future generations.

I hope that one day there will be no need for a closet and have bat shit crazy gay republicans that people can dislike for simply being republicans...(lol)

13. Like something from The Onion
It's frankly unbelievable and a little surreal. I had to double check the source in the link. Like someone pointed out with respect to Foley, Haggard, et al., excuses are the rule, sincere apologies the rare exception.

17. Self-serving until
He stands up in court and opposes Prop 8 and all the other things he voted against us on.

It's time to undo the damage, mr Ashburn.
