Oil spewing from wellhead in Louisiana marsh
20-foot-high plume seen; tug boat hit well before dawn, officials say

Adding insult to the Gulf's injury, a wellhead hit by a tug boat is now spewing oil into a Louisiana marsh, officials said Tuesday.

The oil is shooting up 20 feet into the marsh area, the office of Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser said.

The well is in inland waterways on the border of Plaquemines and Jefferson parishes, about 65 miles south of New Orleans, and in a marsh area not accessible by road.

Jefferson Parish Councilman Chris Roberts was quoted as saying by WWL-TV in New Orleans that "there is a pretty good amount of oil flowing there." He did not have a more specific estimate.

Jefferson Parish officials said emergency crews were at the site assessing how to deal with the spill.

They added that the tug boat hit the well before dawn. The tug boat captain immediately notified officials, and another boat later called in the leak.

Oil spills into Calhoun County creek that leads to Kalamazoo River
Published: Tuesday, July 27, 2010, 8:10 AM Updated: Tuesday, July 27, 2010, 8:42 AM

MARSHALL — More than 800,000 gallons of oil have been released into a creek in Marshall that feeds the Kalamazoo River.

Houston-based Enbridge Energy Partners said Monday that oil flowed into the Talmadge Creek and the Kalamazoo River after a leak developed in its pipeline.

Enbridge said the 30-inch pipeline transfers about 8 million gallons of crude oil a day from Griffith, Ind., to Sarnia, Ontario. The leak originated from the Enbridge site, 16000 Division Drive, near the border of Marshall and Fredonia townships in central Calhoun County, according to a report Battle Creek Enquirer’s website.

<-> After Enbridge learned of the spill, the pipeline was shut down and isolation valves were closed, stopping the flow of oil. Enbridge crews were on scene Monday with oil skimmers and booms on the creek and river, a press release from the company said.

31. What their press release doesn't say is that they sat on it.
They didn't turn the pipe off for 13 hours after a guy living nearby reported the smell to them.

8. How is it possible that a tug boat could hit a wellhead?

Shouldn't there be pilings or something protecting it from traffic?

Barge crashes into oil well in Gulf of Mexico, new oil leak reported

(AFP) – 2 hours ago

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana — The US Coast Guard dispatched emergency teams Tuesday after a boat crashed into an oil well off the coast of New Orleans, reportedly sending crude spewing some 20 feet into the air.

The wellhead, located about 65 miles (104 kilometers) south of New Orleans, was ruptured when it was struck by a dredge barge being pulled by a tug.

The Coast Guard said it could not immediately confirm reports that a giant fountain of oil was now spewing from the damaged wellhead, which was situated only six feet (1.8 meters) below the surface of the sea.

A strike Coast Guard team from Mobile, Alabama had been dispatched by boat to the scene as well as a helicopter from New Orleans with a marine pollution investigator on board.

16. Wellhead hit, leaking oil and natural gas near Bayou St. Denis
Source: wwltv

JEFFERSON, La. – Officials in Jefferson Parish said that a wellhead was hit overnight and it is leaking oil and natural gas near Bayou St. Denis.

Councilman Chris Roberts said he is getting reports of oil in the marsh from the Jefferson Parish emergency management staff. Vessels of opportunity and skimmers on the scene beginning the containment and cleaning up the area.

“There is a pretty good amount of oil flowing there,” said Roberts, though the exact amout is unknown. However, reports now say that mostly natural gas is spewing from the well.

The Coast Guard said the tow boat Pere Ana C. struck the wellhead near Mud Lake early Tuesday. The boat was moved to LaRose after the incident. No injuries were reported.

don't run tow boats near where wellheads are located. Are oil companies now putting wellheads near shipping lanes or something? wtf?

30. According to Kendra
(the wife of a fisherman, who is the unofficial spokesperson for the Gulf these days), there are wellheads just like this one all over the marsh areas in the Gulf. They were left there by the oil companies. I saw her interview (broken into 6 parts) on the Political Videos site here last week, so should be easy enough to find.
