Wildlife Soaked In Oil, Odor Spreads After Pipeline Leaks 840K Gallons Into Kalamazoo River (MI)
Source: Associated Press

MARSHALL TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Officials say 840,000 gallons of oil has leaked from a pipeline into a creek that flows into the Kalamazoo River in southwest Michigan, threatening wildlife and introducing a pungent odor to the area.

Tom Fridel, general manager for Enbridge Liquids Pipelines, says a malfunction caused the leak in the 30-inch pipeline Monday.

Houston-based Enbridge and the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office of Emergency Management says the pipeline pumps were shut down as soon as the leak was discovered.

The pipeline carries about 8 million gallons of oil a day from Griffith, Ind., to Sarnia, Ontario.

The oil spilled into Talmadge Creek, which flows northwest into the Kalamazoo River.

First the one in LA. and now this one.

Coming soon to a location near you; Superfund Site.

Nothing else to say at this point. I think that we're going to become immune to shock or anger to these events which is in a :tinfoilhat: way, maybe their objective.

U.S. Rep. Schauer: Oil spill near Battle Creek largest in Midwest history
Detroit News staff and wire reports

Marshall Township -- As much as 1 million gallons of oil may have leaked into the Kalamazoo River near Battle Creek in what could be one of the largest oil spills in Midwest history, officials say.

U.S. Rep Mark Schauer, D-Battle Creek, called it the "largest oil spill in the history of the Midwest" in a description to President Barack Obama this afternoon prior to a conference call with the media.

"According to EPA officials, this is the largest oil spill ever in the Midwest," he said. "The EPA is estimating 1 million gallons (spilled). ... This feels like déjÀ vu all over again with regard to what happened in the Gulf."

The oil spilled into Talmadge Creek, which flows northwest into the Kalamazoo River. The site is in Calhoun County's Marshall Township near Battle Creek and about 60 miles southeast of Grand Rapids. The pipe may have been leaking for many hours before it was originally reported to have burst Monday morning. Marshall Township fire officials responded to complaints of an oily smell from residents.

Fumes from 840,000-gallon oil leak creep over Battle Creek

Battle Creek area residents are being warned to stay away from the Kalamazoo River because of a major oil spill.

An estimated 840,000 gallons of oil leaked into a creek Monday that feeds into the river.

Area media were reporting that odor from the spill hung heavy over Battle Creek this morning.

"It is unknown at this time how far the spill has traveled and exactly what areas have been affected. It is assumed due to the current level of the Kalamazoo River and the speed of the current that the entire Emmett Township area and beyond has been affected," according to an advisory issued today by the Emmett Township Public Safety Department.

Wayne Hoepner, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, said oil from the spill could reach Lake Michigan as early as Sunday, although numerous variables could affect the flow rate.

20. WTF? BP security scenario is being replayed at the MI spill. Cops working for spillers? No photos?
I've read this story every other day since April and this MI spill is certainly following the same BP no-access security plan.

Michigan oil spill a replay of Gulf spill?
By ED BRAYTON 7/27/10 3:28 PM

It’s looking like the oil spill from a pipeline into the Talmadge Creek in Calhoun County is going to be a replay of the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in at least one respect — the companies, aided by the government, do not want the media to have access to take pictures and video of what is going on. The Michigan Messenger’s Todd Heywood is on the scene and was turned away from one of the primary sites by employees of Enbridge, the company that owns and operates the pipeline.

Heywood was at 12 Mile Rd. and C Avenue at a bridge over the Ceresco Dam when employees from Enbridge turned him away. The employee would only give his name as Mike, and when he noticed Heywood writing down the information he said, “I’m not telling you anything else” and walked away.

A sheriff’s deputy on the scene confirmed that he was not allowed to take pictures there of the oil spill or the wildlife. He then went to the Enbridge command center and was told by Enbridge spokesperson Lorraine Grymala that he would have to go to the Calhoun County Sheriff to talk to them about it.

At the Calhoun County offices, the desk clerk would not give him the contact information for the sheriff or a public information officer and said she was told only to give out an 800 number. That number went to Enbridge, but it is only an answering machine where one can leave messages.

27. Meh. He just needs to talk to the locals.
I can take him down the street to the river and have him get pics. I can take him to the cleanup site I passed today in picking up my kids from Grandma's, and I'm sure one of the county commissioners (whom I know and is a solid Dem) would make sure to get him whatever info he needs.

It's small town here, even though Battle Creek is considered a city. He just needs to talk to people, and he'll get whatever he needs for his story. Even the governor's ticked off at the company and has made it clear they're on a short leash.

23. Oil pipeline leak pollutes major Michigan river
Source: AP

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — Southern Michigan residents are learning that devastating oil spills aren't limited to the Gulf Coast.

Crews were working Wednesday to contain and clean up an estimated 877,000 gallons of oil that coated birds and fish as it poured into a creek and flowed into the Kalamazoo River, one of the state's major waterways.

Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm toured the area by helicopter Tuesday night and said she wasn't satisfied with the response to the spill. The leak in the 30-inch pipeline, which was built in 1969 and carries about 8 million gallons of oil daily from Griffith, Ind., to Sarnia, Ontario, was detected early Monday.

"There needs to be a lot more done," Granholm said. "There are not enough resources on the river right now."

Granholm declared a state of disaster in Calhoun County and potentially affected areas along the river, which eventually bisects the city of Kalamazoo and meanders to Saugatuck, where it empties into Lake Michigan. Officials don't believe oil will spread past a dam upstream of Kalamazoo. The cause of the spill is under investigation.

Calgary, Alberta-based Enbridge Inc.'s affiliate Enbridge Energy Partners LP of Houston initially estimated that about 819,000 gallons of oil spilled into Talmadge Creek before the company stopped the flow.
