Ariz. sheriff: I'll jail immigration protesters (Sheriff Joe Arpaio)
Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON — The sheriff of the most populous county in Arizona says he's "not going to put up with any civil disobedience" when the state's new immigration law takes effect.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio says that if protesters want to block his jail, he'll put them in it.

The Arizona law, which takes effect Thursday, requires officers enforcing other laws to check a person's immigration status if they suspect the person is in the country illegally.

Arpaio told ABC's "Good Morning America" he doesn't know "what the big hype is."

What a twit.

Bigots like that are very myopic and have absolutely no understanding of how
screwed up they are. Believe me, I was raised by one. There's no way to
change the ignorance and bigotry of a sociopath.

The more arrests they make of American citizens, the more quickly enforcement of this law will be suspended.

"That is small change compared with the loss of business for future years that was tentatively booked and canceled after the law passed, Percopo said.

For 2011, the Sheraton's lost business currently stands at just under $2.5 million, he said. From 2012-14, the total is between $4 million and $5 million. All had been on the verge of signing contracts.

"You're not going to start to see the impact, in my opinion, until the mid- to late first quarter of 2011," Percopo said."

Furthermore, the article points out that the Phoenix area was one of the hardest-hit hotel markets in the country last year.

What a huge turn off it is that man and his 'tent prisons' and his racism. I do not even know the name of the Sheriff of the next County over from me, but I know this infamous bigot's name. And millions of spending people avoid Arizona to avoid his policies.
Because of Arpiao, you can buy a condo in Phoenix for 20k if you want to. No one wants to. Arizonans should consider that fact.

39. Not BS -
unfortunately the Patriot Act is alive and well under Obama. It is extremely disappointing that Obama's DOJ has continued with the same policies of his predecessor.

Just one example: "the Obama administration has argued that warrantless tracking is permitted because Americans enjoy no "reasonable expectation of privacy" in their--or at least their cell phones'--whereabouts. U.S. Department of Justice lawyers say that "a customer's Fourth Amendment rights are not violated when the phone company reveals to the government its own records" that show where a mobile device placed and received calls."

Refuse to produce ID, until you get to the police station.

If enough people do this, it will render Arizona's racist law totally ineffective. What's even better, American citizens practicing this style of civil disobedience won't even go to jail!

40. This "law" you speak of is, in fact, illegal
And there are plenty who have a vested interest in making sure this law, authored by a neo-Nazi, cannot be changed "in a mature and civil manner," but instead forced upon the people of Arizona by hook or by crook. Which is what tyranny is.

The Department asked for a preliminary injunction, and U.S. District Court Judge Susan Bolton is expected to issue a preliminary ruling today which may block parts of the law from going into effect.

55. Why wasn't the case being heard sooner? It wasn't filed until July 6
Bolton's ruling will be a waste of time, it will be appealed either way, and I will bet money that the law will go into effect tomorrow

There was more than adequate time to argue this case before the district courts, and this 11th hour nonesense will not be helpful

If this was high on the Justice departments list it would have been filed earlier

94. Because it foreclosed the ability to appeal the PI before the
law was supposed to go into effect.

It's a timing trick. DOJ files, and in the normal course of things, AZ state would get 10 days to two weeks on the outside to file in reply to the PI. Give the judge a few days to chew the reply, and you have a TRO issued right before the effect date, WITHOUT time to appeal to the 9th.

It wasn't because the DOJ was lazy---it's the DOJ playing hardball.

106. Who gives a shit if it pisses you off...
It is the people's right to protest. Somebody a little smarter than you knew the people's right to assemble and petition the government with their grievances does indeed work, and made a place for it in the bill of rights. Maybe you are put off by the Tea Baggers - I don't know - But to suggest that people should not actively exercise their rights shows a total lack of civic wisdom. Do you think the protests of the Civil Rights movement had zero impact? Wasn't law enforcement just doing their duty and upholding the law in the Jim Crow South. Why don't you grow up and read a book? Or if you can't hack that watch a fucking documentary.

105. It's not his salary
It's the graft that he practices that's making him rich:

"On July 8, 2004, Phoenix New Times columnist John Dougherty and reporter Paul Rubin published an article questioning the local sheriff’s ability to own expensive land parcels throughout the county. Sheriff Joseph Arpaio of Maricopa County, Arizona, who makes about $78,000 per year from his sheriff’s salary, had managed to invest $790,000 cash in real estate between 1995 and 2004. Dougherty questioned how Arpaio could have afforded these purchases, and commented that Arpaio had suspiciously requested that the County Recorder’s office seal his records from public view, invoking a state law that allows sheriffs to hide their personal information from the public."

That's among the things the DOJ has him under investigation for...

93. FILL HIS JAIL WITH PROTESTERS!
Then when there's no room for real criminals, Arizonans might wake up.

If I wasn't fortunate enough to have a job right now, I'd consider going down there and "volunteering" a week or two in the pokey just to clog up his jail. I hope they flood his jail with innocents so that the scam is exposed. It would be worth the effort.

100. This is the kind of slimy POS arpaio is

C.T. Vivian of SCLC confronting Sheriff Jim Clark, Selma Alabama, 1965.

Wilson Baker and Jim Clark

Selma Public Safety director Wilson Baker, left, and Dallas County Sheriff Jim Clark during the Selma to Montgomery March in March 1965. Baker strongly disagreed with Clark's brutal treatment of the marchers. (of course, not strongly enough to stop him... )

Today in Maricopa County:

Joe (the Fascist pig) Arpaio...

The similarities are startling, aren't they?

And the hilarious thing about this bigot is that for all the cruelty and indignity he exposes prisoners to, he himself is a corrupt criminal, more so than many of the people he torments.
