Greenland Ice Cap Melt Is Accelerating

2:39pm UK, Saturday July 31, 2010
Katie Stallard, in Greenland

A British research team studying the Greenland ice sheet has discovered evidence of a rapidly accelerating rate of melt.

Dr Alun Hubbard, leading a team from the universities of Swansea and Aberystwyth said the ice sheet in their region had lowered six metres in just a month.

Further north, the Jakobshavn Glacier, a UNESCO World Heritage site near Ilulissat, is also in rapid retreat.

-snip-

This year no "winter tongue" sea ice formed, which normally guards the glacier against melting in the winter months, so scientists think the glacier has been calving all year round.

17. There are some seriously batty comments to this article.
Deniers seem to spend a lot of time commenting to any and all GW articles. It's like a mission to them.

2. Good thing we decided to do NOTHING about global warming!
We are fucked. Our government has decided to wait it out until catastrophe of undeniable proportions makes draconian action unavoidable, instead of taking simple steps to avoid such catastrophe, such as cap and trade, that are relatively painless but politically difficult.

A super majority of actual democrats should have had effective legislation putting us on a course of avoidance or mitigation on the fast track. But we never had such a majority and preferred the comfort of blaming republicans for our failure to act.

10. Probably ?
Here the deal - the world as we know it will end within the decade - there will be global pandemonium through water scarcity, crop failure, heat waves and subsequent mass migration.

This is not fear scaremongering or ignorant doomsday scenario -thats the opinion of the worlds most pre-eminiant authorities on this issue.

Lets be very, very, VERY clear about this : in 1992 to worlds top 100 scientists including all the nobel prize winners met in Rio de janeiro and put forward and urgent plea to cut global Co2 production to 1980 levels by the year 200 or face unstoppable - definite - runaway global warming.

We have had this information for well over 20 years - and absolutely nothing.

We are not probably fcked - we are absolutely without any doubt totally screwed.

If you have children as I do they are going to live in the darkest ages humanity has ever seen. The sad part os that America will suffer the worst through suburbanisation and oil dependence.

15. Welcome to DU-
You are refreshingly informed and reality based in your thinking.
I love seeing posts like yours on DU, even though it is completely
depressing to contemplate the truths you outlined.

Welcome!

7. it probably wouldn't matter anyway
As I recall, TPTB decided that *they* would allow a certain amount of rise in temperature. Seriously. TPTB so believe in their elite status that they think they can control how much the temperature rises. Either that, or they think we are so stupid that we believe in their ability to control it.

It is out of control. The damage is done. We are past too many tipping points and likely in runaway warming already.

Not that we should be doing things. But the things they were going to do wouldn't have made a damned bit of difference.

We as individuals, however, can stop waiting for the government to "do something" and at least stop using as much as possible. I've just switched to solar cooking. I already have cut back on heating oil, gas, etc. to the best of my financial ability at this moment in time. As soon as I finish school and am able to work full time at a job that pays a decent wage, I'll be investing in a windmill. Within a few years of that, solar and an electric car. Assuming we even have that much time...

14. NATIONALIZE the oil industry -- until we do we will never get alternative energy --
nor be able to control and contain the pollution/damage done to nature by the

oil industry --

Our military, as well, uses most of the oil --

No oil -- no wars!!

hmmm... oil is a "national security" issue, it seems?

Capitalism is based on exploitation --

Let's move on!
