CNN) -- A plane crashed near Dillingham, Alaska, Monday night with some survivors and some fatalities, the Alaska Air National Guard told CNN.

Officials do not yet know what kind of plane went down in an area about 17 miles north of Dillingham, said Guard spokesman Maj. Guy Hayes. It reportedly had eight people on board, the Guard said.

Bad weather was reported in the area at the time of the crash about 7 p.m. (11 p.m. ET), Hayes said.

The aircraft, which was reported overdue, bears the tail number N455A, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. That aircraft is a 1957 DeHavilland DHC-3 Otter registered to GCI, according to FAA records. The FAA did not immediately provide other information about how it knows that this is the aircraft.

Friends of former U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens said he was traveling Monday to the GCI-owned Agulowak Lodge near Lake Aleknagik, and they were concerned for him.

A woman who answered the phone at the Anchorage home of retired Air Force Gen. Joe Ralston, a good friend of Stevens, said Ralston was with Stevens' wife, Catherine, comforting her and trying to find out what was going on.

No one answered the phone at the homes of Stevens' daughter, Susan Covich, in Kenai, or his son, Ben, in Anchorage.

1. well, I hope he's alright.
as much as I disagree with him and hold a low opinion of his views, I hate to hear that anyone is hurt or dead from a plane crash.

4.  Plane crashes in Alaska with 8 on board Former Senator Ted Stevens feared to be a passenger
Source: MSNBC

A plane believed to be carrying eight people has crashed in southwest Alaska, authorities said on Tuesday.

It was feared that former Sen. Ted Stevens was on board the flight, but officials have not been able to confirm that, local station KTUU TV reported.

Alaska National Guard spokesman Maj. Guy Hayes said the Guard was called to the area about 20 miles north of Dillingham at about 7 p.m. Monday after a passing aircraft saw the wreckage.

There were possible fatalities, Hayes said. State and federal officials said severe weather has hampered the rescue operation.

8. This is tragic
The plane in question is a 1957 DeHavilland DHC-3 otter:

This happens all the time with small, single-engine airplanes. Was it pilot error, engine failure or stress on the plane's 53 year old airframe? It probably had been refurbished at least once since it was built, but I'm not sure I'd want to fly in any aircraft that old without a parachute.

10. A bit more info
The plane was a single-engine otter, dating back to 1957. The NTSB said it had been retrofitted with a turboprop engine.

Hayes says about five good Samaritans were on scene early Tuesday helping the crash victims. He says he was told by Alaska State Troopers that there were "eight or nine" people on board, though a spokeswoman for the troopers, Megan Peters, refused to comment.

Friends of former Sen. Stevens said he was traveling Monday to the GCI-owned Agulowak Lodge near Lake Aleknagik, and they were concerned for him, the Anchorage Daily News reported.

As usual going to one of his corporate buddies lodge.

Still a shame that people have died in this crash and others may be seriously injured. I can't wish ill even on the likes of Ted Stevens.

22. Prominent DC lobbyist/ex Senate staffer also on board
http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/

TPM has confirmed that DC lobbyist Jim Morhard was also a passenger on the plane that crashed in Alaska. Katherine Hennessey Gronberg, vice president of Morhard & Associates, says she doesn't know anything about Morhard's condition. Morhard was chief of staff of the Senate Appropriations Committee from 2003-05, when Stevens was chairman of the committee

23. I've got my tin foil hat on.
The report I read said that Stevens and former NASA chief Sean O'Keefe were on the plane and that report does not include the names of the purported survivors.

Are there any reasons that Bushco may want these two silenced? Hmmmmmm.

27. the guy is nearly 87 and totally out of the news
Why would he? And are all the others on that plane pulling the same thing? And why? And how?

In other words, whether or not Ted Stevens "could pull a Ken Lay" the answer is that this crash isn't that.
