Scientists Allege Federal Gov’t Tried to Muffle Plume Findings
Source: ProPublica

by Marian Wang
August 10, 2010

When news first spread about the huge plumes of dispersed oil discovered by scientists in the deep waters of the Gulf, the federal government’s reaction was to criticize the media’s reporting <1>. Here’s the head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, on May 17:

Media reports related to the research work conducted aboard the R/V Pelican included information that was misleading, premature and, in some cases, inaccurate.

Now, scientists behind some of the plume research have spoken out about what went on behind the scenes <2> with the federal agencies that sponsored their research. The St. Petersburg Times relays this from one scientist at the University of South Florida:

"I got lambasted by the Coast Guard and NOAA when we said there was undersea oil," USF marine sciences dean William Hogarth said. Some officials even told him to retract USF's public announcement, he said, comparing it to being "beat up" by federal officials.

There, fixed it for ya.

That oil spill was a lot worse that we were led to believe. Why was BP in charge of our Coast Guard and Gulf states law enforcement?

And now I hear BP feels they do not have to bottom kill the well because the top kill worked.
Do they plan on using the relief well to extract the oil?

9. I generally credit those reading my posts with the discernment to
"get it" that I'm being sarcastic without my using the infamous Thingie. As it happens, BL & I have sufficient "history" here to know that we're both on the same side of the fence on most things. Including thins issue, of course.

2. Did anyone with more than a 3rd Grade education believe there wasn't undersea oil?
What a waste of time trying to cover that one up. Apparently, nobody was fooled except the TV and cable networks, and most of the U.S. print media, and they're pros at being led by the nose.

5. The media aren't fooled. They're just doing the job
that their corporate masters require of them.

13. Sounds like a conspiracy to me
Even BP got in on it when whats-his-face claimed there were no plumes.

NOAA, Coast Guard and BP were all onboard with conspiring to keep the truth from being known.

Good thing the professional left is still hacking away at the wall.
