New jobless claims rise to highest level since February
Source: MSNBC

Initial requests for jobless benefits rose again last week to the highest level since February — a sign that hiring remains weak and some companies are still cutting workers.

The number of new claims for jobless benefits rose 2,000 to 484,000 in the week ended August 7, the second straight increase, Labor Department data showed on Thursday.

The four-week moving average, which economists prefer because it smoothes out weekly fluctuations, rose 14,250 to 473,500, also the highest level since the week ended February 20.

Economists polled by Reuters had expected claims in the latest week to fall to 465,000 from the previously reported 479,000.

2. Sure is
Just like Shrub thought we could shop our way to prosperity and just think happy thoughts about the war that we'd win, so, too, should we all be happy we're alive in this wonderful country that *always* puts People Over Profits!

5. The Dow Doesn't have anything to do with the Real Economy and hasn't for a long time.
Edited on Thu Aug-12-10 08:12 AM by TheWatcher
Pay attention to Main Street, not Wall Street.

Pay attention to what is going on around you, and not what the TV tells you to think.

There aren't any answers in the Dow, CNBC, The Fed, or the Financial Media.

We Are On Our Own.

6. "We are on our own" - true words.
Have been for a long time.
The common people, the poor, the workers of this country have to realize the strength and toughness that is our heritage - white, black, Latino, Asian, Native American.
The bosses and the fat cats need us - we don't need them...

9. where's the merrymaking marching band on this? You know, the ones who said it was going to be
*better* in the next figure release? All I hear is crickets on this thread. Guess Gibbs still needs champions on other threads. :sarcasm:

When a crowd of people, 3 times the expected size, shows up for a CHANCE to get on a subsidized housing list hits the MSM -- you've got to realize the economy is NOT recovering - if anything it's circling the drain FASTER. It's frigging REAL folks -- and all the blinkers and lalalalalala-ing into the ether isn't going to change it.

10. Cue the Obama cheerleading team
By that, I mean the stream of "administration officials" who routinely get trotted out on the TEE VEE to tell us that everything will be better and not to worry. This is the same M.O. that bush used. In fact, this is the same M.O. we saw in the old Soviet Union. While they're performing this feat of distraction, the plundering of the treasury by the banksters and the top 1% continues unabated, assisted by the very same "administration officials" who go home every night to their mansion in their "gated community."

11. I am sadly amazed at how many similarities there are between
Obama and the Bush Cabal. And that their method of doing business is similar is disturbing, at best.

13. at least with the bush group we didn't have to deal with shouting matches
in our own forums. Now, just watch the tag-teaming being done by DINOS in liberal forums.

17. It took as a long time to create this mess
And we aren't going to clean it up quickly. People in this country have a fast food mentality and want things now. Sorry, not this time...

18. Considering the policies of both parties in the last 3 decades
got us here, I don't think they plan on cleaning it up at all. The millions of long term unemployed and their families many of whom don't have enough to feed, house or care for themselves, don't have a fast food mentality. It's more like I can't find ANY job so I can feed my kids mentality.

Get a clue.

Wall street does just fine without the long term unemployed as does this administration.

19. It's a good thing they've got a 'fast food mentality' then -
because maybe they can psyche themselves into believing they aren't hungry. Or homeless. Or jobless. Or sick without any hope of medical care.

For what - should we give it another year or so before we start complaining? Oh, no - let's wait until after the mid-term elections; gotta protect those Democrats in Congress, right? Probably should wait until after the next general election, too; we need to make sure that we reelect the President along with all those Dems in Congress . . .

So we'll just be patient for another couple of years. At least - because this mess took a long time to create.

When someone is drowning, do you stand by the side of the pond and tell them they need to be patient because it was the last three or four city councils that approved dredging the pond too deep and it will take time for the current council to shovel all that dirt back so they can climb out on their own?
