Boehner calls for ousting Geithner, Summers

By DAVID LIGHTMAN
McClatchy Newspapers

WASHINGTON -- The top Republican in the House of Representatives on Tuesday called for President Barack Obama to fire top economic advisers Timothy Geithner and Larry Summers as part of an effort to revive the ailing economy.

"President Obama should ask for - and accept - the resignations of Secretary Geithner and Larry Summers," Rep. John Boehner of Ohio said in a Tweet.

Geithner is the treasury secretary. Summers is the head of the National Economic Council.

"This is no substitute for a referendum on the president's job-killing agenda," Boehner was to say later Tuesday in a speech to the City Club of Cleveland. "That question will be put before the American people in due time. But we do not have the luxury of waiting months for the president to pick scapegoats for his failing 'stimulus' policies."

Boehner was to elaborate on his views in the Cleveland speech. Citing "ongoing economic uncertainty," he planned to outline in that address a five-point plan that includes extending tax cuts that are set to expire at the end of this year.

1. This seems to be reverse psychology
He wants them to stay so the economy continues to decline, and the best way to insure that is to call for them to be fired, which draws the partisans out to rally behind both of them so they stay on the job.

12. Seems that way. We are supposed to react negatively
to his suggestion I suppose. I agree with him, they should never have been part of this administration or any other.

I forget who said it, but the Economic team right now 'looks like the Board of Directors of Goldman Sachs'. And that is not an exaggeration as that is who has benefited most from bailouts and from other policies of this administration.

2. I call for the people of his district to oust Boehner.
It's not that I am a big fan of either Summers or Geithner, but Boehner is the lowest of the low.

19. It feels so weird.
But let's congratulate him for finally catching on to the concept of bipartisanship. And give him our full support. Tell him how happy he's made us.

I'm going for a full brain scramble.

you always disagree with.

Too bad he couldn't get his buddies in the senate to block their nomination retroactively.

10. Every time he utters the phrase
"the American people want..." -- just makes me livid. As if he either knows or gives a damn about what we want. His presence in congress is a continuing insult to the people of this country.

Go to hell, John Boehner. Just fucking go to hell.

14. Great Opportunity, I Agree
We should take advantage of his statement and act with him to get the Banksters thrown out of these positions of influence. Look through the haze of divide and conquer and get them removed, it is very important.

21. Anyone taking Anything this man says ...
serious enough to agree or disagree just plain isn't paying attention.

Those agreeing that Geithner and Summers be removed should realize that Boehner is using a Leftwing talking point. By your voicing agreement allows him to say, "See ... Even President Obama's base thinks we're on the wrong course." And then, if/when President Obama acts, it'll be more of the same lock-step obstruction; and when President Obama doesn't act, Boehner will say, "See President Obama is opposing the will of the people, even those of his party."

I think the far better response to Boehner is to treat him like that derelict, "special" uncle who shows up at the family gatherings ... you don't engage him; rather, you limit your conversation with him to saying, "Really? Oh, that's nice" and then you just keep it moving.

However, we should really focus on calling him out on his lies and force him to answer or STFU.

stalled appointments by the Republicans in the Senate. Guarenteed to grind the economy to a halt.
