Job openings rise for first time since April

WASHINGTON – Job openings rose in July after two months of declines, a positive sign that companies could step up hiring in the coming months.

The Labor Department says the number of jobs advertised rose by 6.2 percent to 3.04 million. That's the highest total since April, when temporary census hiring inflated that month's figure.

Even with the increase, openings remain far below the 4.4 million that existed in December 2007, when the recession began.

The report, the Job Openings and Labor Turnover survey, indicates heavy competition for jobs. In July, 4.8 unemployed people, on average, were vying for each opening. That's an improvement from the peak of 6.3 in November 2009. But it's far more than the 1.8 unemployed people competing for each opening when the recession began.

I read, I wish I could find it now, that at the peak of this 2nd RepubliCON Great Depression, the numbers were more like 8 unemployed people for each job opening. Also, during the Clinton years, it was 4 jobs for each unemployed person.

Remember before the bushes regime, employers were complaining about not having enough workers to meet the job openings. Of course that was before the idiot and chief GWB finished off the remains of our bubble economy.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Job openings are rising modestly, a sign that employers may step up hiring soon.

But rising openings in the past year haven't reduced unemployment, heightening concerns that the unemployed might lack the skills to fill the jobs that are coming available. If companies have openings but can't find qualified workers, that will make it even harder to lower the unemployment rate.

Some economists argue that the broader problem is that the economy just isn't generating enough jobs.

very rural in NC. Can't get anybody to take them. Of course the only housing is about 30 to 60 minutes away. People don't want to sell any land so the town is dying. School population went from 1025 when I first got here to 900 now. So there are a few jobs out there but sometimes their not worth it in a way.
