Discarded cigarettes blamed for Princeton apartment building fire
Source: NBC

PRINCETON, IN (WFIE) - Investigators believe Wednesday's fire at the Vail Estates apartment complex in Princeton was started by a lit cigarette..

Princeton Fire Chief Tim Speedy believes discarded cigarettes started the fire on a second floor deck that quickly spread to the entire 36-unit complex. The fire climbed to the roof causing it to collapse.

"We were able to eliminate all the accidental causes," he said. "Eliminate the wiring and everything else. We can't eliminate the discarding of smoking materials on the deck of apartment 22."

Speedy says several occupants in the apartment were smoking on the deck about an hour before the fire started.

2. just another ridiculous waste....
all from an industry that fights change at every turn...oh, they could make a cigarette that goes out when not puffed by the idiot who is smoking it but they won't. i hate smokers because not only do they pollute themselves and everyone around them, they have to toss the fucking things everywhere they go.

7. except they don't work
The extra paper just makes the burning section able to burn longer and more able to light up anything it touches. It also made people less aware of what they're doing with their lit cigs. Falling off ash with the added paper enables that falling ash to still be lit when it touches the ground because the added paper added more fuel to burn especially right at the filter so a big burning ember falls out still live when it hits the floor. I've had to slap out so many carpet, furniture, clothing and skin burns since they added the extra paper that some dolt thought would put the cig out since they did this idiot move of adding the paper it's ridiculous, and every smoker I know complains of the same. Also have frequent ashtray fires I'd never had until this. The only time they DO go out is WHILE you're smoking them.

9. Okay, I'm a smoker
Edited on Sat Sep-11-10 07:54 AM by FirstTimeVoterAt37
Flame away, that's cool, it's not like I'm not used to it. I would like to share my personal habits.

I bought a decent cigarette case. Those times that I'm smoking in public, I crush out my cigarettes (rolling them between my BARE fingers to make sure they're 100% out), then either toss them in a nearby trash can, or if one is not available the butt goes BACK IN MY CIGARETTE CASE until I get to one.

Tear me a new one for smoking if it makes you feel better. But if the gun nuts can shoot people and claim second amendment rights, I can NOT litter, NOT smoke near non-smokers (no, not even in places that allow it), and NOT set any goddamn fires.

I am now ready for your loathing.

(EDIT: I live with a smoke-friendly roommate in a smoke-friendly apartment. Only time I ever smoke inside is the few days a year it's 20 degrees below zero outside.)
