FCC opens up unused TV signals for broadband
Source: The Associated Press

The Federal Communications Commission is opening up unused airwaves between television stations for wireless broadband networks that will be more powerful and can travel farther than today's Wi-Fi hotspots.
The five-member FCC voted unanimously Thursday to allow the use of so-called "white spaces" between TV stations to deliver broadband connections that can function like Wi-Fi networks on steroids. The agency is calling the new technology "super Wi-Fi" and hopes to see devices with the new technology start to appear within a year.
FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said white spaces networks will serve as "a powerful platform for innovation," driving billions in industry investment.

nothing, while the companies using the airwaves reap billions of dollars. And eventually, when it's discovered that high-speed concentrated data transmission through the air increases cancer rates, nothing will happen again. But what the hell, we will be able to download 10,000 Hi-Def movies in 10 minutes.

6. All I know is that AM radio reception in our area has been screwed up ever since TV went digital.
Some days I can't even listen to a 50k flamethrower only 55 miles away.

11. I test electronics
...to determine if they cause interference with other products. The "levels" that would cause health effects are way higher than the levels that products are tested at. This type of testing: www.conformity.com

12. The bandwidth they're freed up isn't much of anything
The initial figures I've seen thrown about are in the 1.5Mbps range, not even enough to deliver a single HD video stream in any current compression format.
